Pleeeeeease help...can't get ipaq 4705 to install ANYTHING

OK, thanks all for looking, even though I am a n00b.

I can't seem to get my Ipaq to do much of anything. Yeah, it browses the web, writes word docs, all the preloaded stuff. But it refuses to install anything!

Specs: Ipaq 4705, WM2003SE.

The problem:

I have tried dozens of programs downloaded off the internet. It utterly refuses to install any CAB files...constantly get the "there is no application associated with xxxx". Have tried numerous CABs, as well as installing on my PC and hoping activesync would do it's job, to no avail.

Furthermore, any exe I download, which is clearly a valid WM exe, gives me the error "not a valid windows CE application".

Furthererermore, every attempt to download and run any kind of JVM/JRE has failed, again, ipaq won't open it 'cause "there is no application associated with xxxx" and "not a valid windows CE application". I guess running Opera and every other of the million java based programs is out of the question now.

Furthererererermore, I have found a few zip that claim to be valid programs...but every time I try to download an unzipper, get the &&#*#ing ""not a valid windows CE application" error again.

I am running in circles and can't seem to install anything to my device.

What the hell am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your time, and have a wonderful day.

CAB files you copy directly to the device, then tap then and they open up and install.

EXE files you download to your computer, select them ON YOUR COMPUTER and an installation wizard opens up and walks you through the rest of the installation.

JVM/JRE need a Java machine to be installed on the device before you can do anything with them. The hx4700 does not have a Java machine on it, so for the time being just don't try to install java applications on the device.

For more detailed instructions, see this article, "I bought a piece of software, now what do I do?"

Download: cab install - srry can't post link :( until I have 15 posts or more... find pocketpcfreeware dot com and search the site for cabinstall or google cabinstall.

Copy + Paste it somewhere on your device somewhere, from there open it up - associate cab files with that program - now you can install by default location or choose another...
