You really see the touchpad as a con just because you have to get used to it? Damn you and your fear of change ;) It's a great idea! True onehanded operation! The review was very professional and informative, though. The only thing keeping me from buying one right now is the possibility that the Dell Axim X50 will be better - so I'm just waiting for some official details from Dell.

It just depends on what software you will use and especially what games you play. It has its advantages and disadvantages.

Yeah, I know that all too well, but I've pretty much decided on getting an HX4700 after this:
After 10 minutes of talking to India Tech Support (tm)...
"When is the Axim X50 out in the United Kingdom?"
"What is it that you are wanting sir?"
"I want to know when the Axim X50 is going to be out in the United Kingdom..."
"The problem is the X50 is not on the market there yet"
"I know..."
"We have the X30 which is the curre--"
"No, I want to know when the X50 is going to be out in the United Kingdom."
"Errr.. It will be there in one to two months"
"Ok, thanks for your help, bye."
(I posted this on AximSite.com -- thought it would be a giggle for all of you ;) )

I was also waiting for some kind of announcement on the X50. I spoke to dell uk and was told "sometime in December". Purchased my HX4700 shortly after that.

I just got my 4705 yesterday - I am quite happy with it so far. I use it 90% for business and a good PPC is important for me for business. I like the touchpad - I love the touchpad on my laptop so I'm quite used to touchpads. I have no problem with it.

I LOVE my new iPAQ HX4705! The screen is outstanding and the unit is very fast. It also has a cool onscreen keyboard. But there are some drawbacks. Not all of my existing software works on it. And there is only 64 meg ram so I ran out almost right away. I don't use the touchpad and sometimes when I touch it accidentally, everything starts moving around on the screen. I had a hard time setting up my WiFi but once I did, the internet and MSN Messenger work fine. I still have an existing problem with my email (that I had on my previous 5455 upgraded to WM2003). When I try to access my email, I get an error message that says "The server certificate is invalid" and I can download email (after a LONG wait) but not send. But this is probably for another forum.
I would recommend this iPAQ if you want the latest in the cool department.

Help before buying
I am a new subscriber, and please let me know if I am inappropriately asking this here, but I have searched through a lot of posts and did not see my issue addressed.
I have decided to purchase a 4700, but would like to prevent the mistakes I have previously made when purchasing new products. Therefore, I would like a basic list of product accessories (data cards) and software that are recommended, and recommended against, as well as best places to purchase these.
Then I would like assistance in installing everything right the first time, but we can get to that later.
Thanks.

JohnGlock, A new thread might be a better way to get more people to see it, but for the moment, this will work too. :)
Anyway, what's recommended has a tendency to deal with what you'll be doing with the hx4700, and it's highly preferential to personal tastes. But, things to think of right off the bat are storage, and protection for the device. Beyond that, it's all dependent on what you'll be doing with the device.
Tell us a bit more about what you'll be doing with it, and we can certainly help out further!
Cheers!

Help before buying
Thanks for the quick reply. Right, sure thing about applications, I was just thinking in terms of "everybody must have" type software and data storage -- like, utilities, or "don't bother to buy a [Blank] Card, go right for the Super Duper [Blank] card", type of advice. I am almost completely ignorant about PDA's, so elementary advice is welcomed, like, I see it has 2 types of data storage cards, which should I use for what?
My personal use will primarily be lunch hour work on my Word and Powerpoint presentations (can't take my laptop everywhere) and internet downloading of research material. Eventually I'll be adding a GPS. Otherwise, whatever else comes along to play with (not a Gamer or Movie watcher, though). I have a 40GB Zen Jukebox, so MP3 audio isn't high on my list at present, but eventually I'll give my Jukebox to one of my kids and add audio to my 4700.
So, like you said, storage and protection. And add basic utilities type programs essential to safe/effective operation.
Thanks.

benn600,
I read your review (and posts from others/other forums) last week while waiting for my 4700 to arrive. It came yesterday and I had no problems setting it up. So far I've not had any of the problems I've seen others mention in the forums here. I don't play action games, so probably won't even notice the d-pad gone.
From the reviews I was expecting the 4700 to be larger than my 3955, but I have to say the 4700 "seems" slightly smaller, feels better in my hand, and seems much more sleek that the curvy 3955.
Also, I kinda like the flip cover on the 4700. It beats the heck out of the cover sleeve for the 3955 which added a lot of bulk to that device. BTW - I did order a Sena Case.
One more note, for anyone who is forced to use Lotus Notes at work, the mNotes synchronization software that comes bunbled on the companion CD is the slickest product I've come across for keeping Lotus Notes correctly synchronized with the PDA. I highly recommend it. :approve: It beats the pants off of IBM's EasySync (what a contradiction in terms).
Anyway, thanks again for your reviews and input in the forums.
