Does Sprite backup work?

I believe the built in version of iPaq back-up on your unit and Sprite Back-up are one and the same. Which DOES claim to have the ability to restore across ROM updates.
Per Shallax's post above - do a full back, upgrade the ROM and restore the back-up.

thankfully- i'm glad to report that the updater works as expected when the rom update fails (as in you forgot that the ipaq was in a usb hub and the power to it went bye bye)
it takes a minute or so until the computer figures out there's a timeout and then you just do a soft reset and the bootloader comes up. you exit the updater, run it again and plug in the ipaq. and you're good to go.

Hmmm,
According to the READ ME file that came with the ROM
-------------
***CAUTION***
The ROM Update Utility is designed to erase and replace the
current ROM image and any existing ActiveSync partnerships
including all user data and programs on the HP iPAQ Pocket PC
and in the iPAQ File Store. HP recommends that users perform a
backup of their personal data using Microsoft Activesync or iPAQ
Backup before proceeding with the ROM update. This is only as a
precautionary measure and should not be used after the ROM update.
(NOTE)
HP recommends that Backups made from a HP iPAQ Pocket PC ROM
should only be installed on a HP iPAQ Pocket PC handheld with the
same model number and ROM version number from which the backup
was created. Installing old Backups onto ROM versions the Backup
was not created on may interfere with the operation of the new
ROM causing it to become unstable.
---------------------------------
Not a glowing recommendation for using the pre-installed backup routine.
I thought, maybe incorrectly, that the version of Sprite that came with the IPAQ was a lite version and that the full version had more capabilities. Can anyone clarify?
Thanks,
Ski

Backing up before ROM update-
So then I have a question. I did a backup, and stored it in my ipaq file store, which was dumb, yes. But, is there ANY way to retrieve that?

Sorry, since the update wipes out the IPAQ File Store I think you are out of luck .
I don't beleive that an activesync backup will work either since all partnerships are blown away by the ROM update and you have to define a new partnership.

Thank you. I am an idiot, but with desktops, I always am on people to backup regularly, so I guess I deserved it, although I did backup! (just to the wrong place!)

My understanding is that (someone please correct me if I am wrong) is that it is basically the PPC version of Sprite as opposed to the 'Premium' version (which has a PC component to it).

I did some research at the Sprite website and it clearly shows that the Sprite version that ships with the IPAQ does NOT support "Device Upgrade Mode".
http://www.spritesoftware.com/en/per...paq_backup.htm
IMHO I think it's probably worth the $10 to upgrade prior to installing the ROM update.

OK, after downloading the software and looking at the FAQ at the Sprtie website it looks like there are some specialized procedures involving the downloading of another file (GETUPGRADEDATA) and running it on the IPAQ prior to doing the Device Upgrade. In other words - READ THE SPRITE WEBSITE before upgrading the ROM.

There's 85.06MB of storage on the iPAQ File Store (I forget how much there was originally). I have Sprite Backup Premium which worked perfectly. Theres a 15 day trial (I believe) which should see you through the upgrade process - its definitely worth buying, though!
I didn't need to do ANYTHING special with my backup. I just made a FULL backup (including all persistent storage) - it came to about 150MB.

That's interesting. The Read Me file with the update clearly states that everything in the file store gets blown away by the upgrade.
I just want to try and cover all the bases before I update in order to minimize the chance of trouble.
Thanks,
Ski

I assume Shallax copied the back-up file created to his PC or SD card before he did the update - otherwise it WILL get written over.
