It works: this time for real.

I just completed the upgrade to the right version.

I got a scare since the rfirst time it crashed and finally i was able to complete.

I re-installed from srte backup and everything seems to be working.

I also tried to unstall the audio patch but was not able to remove.

Doing it now - it doesn't tell you that the PC loses it's USB connection and the Ipaq appears to switch off ! But the % is still going up and I can see a vague HP logo on the Ipaq screen so I assume it's still working

Here's what I did. I ran a complete backup of my HX4700 using the Sprite Backup Premium PC version and it created a 1gb file on my hdd (included all data on my 4700 including 1GB SD and 1GB CF cards)

I ran the ROM update and it seemed to work OK. I then restored the backup from my HDD to the 4700 and it reported a restore failed, unexpected error. A lot of the data is back, including my PIM data, but anything that was installed on the iPaq Memory is gone. In fact my system reports that there are two iPaq memory locations iPaq Filestore 1 and iPaq Filestore 2. Not sure what went wrong.

I'm going to try a hard reset and then restore again. But if anyone has a clue I'd be interested.

Hard Reset 4700 and restored the full backup with Sprite Premium. This time it worked perfectly. Haven't found any improvements yet but it worked.

Ok, so much for doing homework.......

I followed the directions on the Sprite site to backup my old ROM image.

I ran the ROM update and now Sprite Premium does not recognize the backed up file. For some reason the back up file has a .exe extension instead of .pbf but the file itself is not executable. I tried changing the extension but Sprite says it is not a valid back up file. :bang: :bang: :bang:

That's how much there was origionally...on my ver 1.0 right now.

As far as backing up...if the installed Ipaq Backup works...
Do a full backup, then copy entire contents of File Store to somewhere else...DS/CF or desktop.
Run update.
Copy the data back to the File Store, and then do a restore.

Hopefully this might work. Although I will be doing a complete wipe and reinstall just to clean all the registry junk out and unused programs...then move my help folder over to filestore again, and remove those started programs (can't remember what those were.)

Who knows, I might do a SPB bench mark before and after to see what performance gains were had...hell, I WILL be doing this...so keep in touch tonight to see what my results are (plenty of time during American Idol and House to do this. :D)

I've downloaded the new ROM and installed it and then sent an e-mail to HP Service asking them when the new ROM will be released. I was really shocked by their reply...

I downloaded the full sprite backup program and ran the full backup. Followed all the instructions. Restore worked OK with errors. When it rebooted, the display was screwed up. Looked like the registry didn't restore properly.

So, hard reset and re-install everything (all my DATA was saved OK).

Dear friends,

there is still a question not really answered:
is this a multilanguage rom update (i.e., can I update my GERMAN hx4700) or is it only an English one that wouldn't work at all or fix my hx4700 to English language??
I do not dare to try the upgrade before I have got an answer...

Kind regards from cold and rainy Germany,
wt

bhands - Thank God you are O.K.; I was starting to worry that the news of the ROM update release had caused you to go into cardiac arrest!
