Ratoc CF USB, HDD, and TCPMP

For all of you, who, like me, want to put a >20GB hard drive on your Pocket PC and PACK it full of MP3s and have been ripping your hair out over it, here are some helpful tidbits of info.

You can over-draw power from the HX4700. Before you try all this BACK IT ALL UP! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GODDESS, AND ALL THAT IS HOLY, MAKE A BACK UP!

In TCPMP, go to settings, in player, find the Microdrive checkbox.
One of my drives, this needs to be on in order for it to play fast enough, but on any other external I used, this MUST BE OFF to avoid a hard reset.

It is BRUTALLY SLOW making a playlist. However, once you get the first track playing, it's smooth, and you can skip through tracks like a hot knife through butter.

The RATOC card doesn't seem to like my retractable USB 2 cable. I've tested the cable on other equipment, and it's fine. Go fig.

If you get a MiO Pocket enclosure, it comes with a cable to connect to a USB port for power, and a separate cable that is just a USB to USB mini. On the desktop, I only need the USB mini cable.
What's nice about this drive is the USB power cable is a PASS THROUGH. Right now, I have the pass through plugged in to a VersaSync Pro with the Pocket PC connected to the pass-through port. Yes, I'm running both the Pocket PC and the drive off one VersaSync Pro.
DANGER! This WILL NOT WORK with the original VersaSync and may actually catch fire. ONLY do this with the Versa Sync Pro. If you don't know the difference between the two, the Pro is fatter and should say Pro on it. The original is 500mA and the Pro is a full 1A

Let me know if you guys discover anything to make it faster!

So apart from the slow playlist thing.. how are you finding the Ratoc.

I've been tempted, but never been able to justify the price

Well, I purchased it for the sole purpose of attaching a hard drive to it, and it's taken me a year to figure out how, just to get VERY POOR performance and even POORER reliability.

It's use is EXTREMELY limited. Basically, thumb drives will work, and any LOW POWER (or self powered) mass storage will work. Oh, you could plug in a keyboard. You can put in a mouse, but there is no cursor. (If you drag it to one corner, and have a good enough imagination to know where the cursor would be, you CAN click on stuff)

I think I've outgrown Pocket PC and need to wait for tiny form factor PCs to get to a point I'm happy with. (Such as the OQO)
I just need them to have an instant start for basic functions (like contacts and such).
Basically, if Pocket PC and an OQO mated and had a child, I'd be happy. Although, knowing Windows, it'd be HORRIBLY inbred.

I've had the Ratoc for almost two years and have never justified the price I paid. I can use a full size keyboard or get info from my colleagues thumbdrives and therefore it has acted as a mini laptop which has been great on my many travels but hard drive access is slow, I can't get a joystick or game controller to work and there are no mouse drivers that mate to the 4700 builtin cursor
