I'm new to the PDA world and need some basic help!
First, can Active sync (I have v4.2) control the direction in which "synchronising" of Outlook contacts is done? I would like to keep my home XP PC as master, and only copy data TO my hx4700 PDA, not FROM it. (It seems to be bi-directional at the moment!)
Second - I have a lot of contacts on the PDA which I would like to delete. Do I have to delete them one by one, or can I delete the lot in one go

Welcome to MobilitySite
Yes, ActiveSync can control the direction of the sync! The good news is that it will also sync all unique contacts and resolve conflicting data in the way that you instruct it. From memory, when you conect your device for the first time, AS will ask you which direction you wish to sync: you will just select pc to pda.
In answer to your second querry, you can select multiple contacts by tapping, holding and moving the stylus down the list: when you stop the circle of blue dots will prompt the menu to appear and you tap delete or cut.
with activesync running and your device connected, go to "tools" then "options," select (highlight) your host or main computer and at the bottom of the dialog window, select settings. where it says "if there is a conflict," this is where you set which device (the computer or the device) will take precidence...
second, the easiest way to manage contacts, calander, tasks, and notes, is through outlook. its the fastest most convienient way to add modify and delete items from the device

This option only applies to synching conflicts that can occur if you change an entry on the pocket pc and change the same entry on the computer. But does not apply at all for unique entries. So if you change or delete a contact on your pocket pc and sync to your computer, the change or deletion will be synced to your computer.
Unfortunately, Activesync cannot accommodate one way syncing

John, you did mention this in your reply, but I just wanted to reiterate it since one can easily mess up their data if they don't clearly understand it. I have looked and looked for a way to sync one way (this would be my preference too), but so far no such luck.

Both Julie and John are right! I should have made it clear that I was talking about the initial sync and, after rereading your post, it seems that you have already connected. :o
The first connection dictates which duplicate entries will be favoured during the first sync - as I indicated all unique contacts will be updated regardless of the direction.
