USB not recognised

Hi,
I have a HP 4700 which has been working fine until yesterday, now when I sync it, I get the message USB not recognised. I have tried re-installing Active Sync, and turning the machine off and removing the plug, but it still keeps happening.

Any ideas?

Pete

When you say you turned the machine off are you talking about your PC? If not, then reboot your PC. If you have rebooted your PC & the problem is still there then try this:

1. Unplug your PPC from your PC.
2. On your PC, in Task Manager/Processes, stop wcescomm.exe
3. On your PPC, in Settings/Running Programs, stop Activsync.
3. Connect your PPC to your PC & wait a minute. If nothing happens then, on your PC, start up Activsync (under Start/All Programs).

Hopefully it will all start working again.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately all that seemed to happen was my mouse and keyboard stopped working. I tried to sync the Ipaq with another computer which is networked to mine but the same thing happened. I tried a hard reset which initially worked but now I have got the error message back, even if I hard reset again.

Any further ideas?

On the PC, click on Start/Control Panel, double click on System, choose the Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager - at the bootom of the list, open up the USB controllers & check that there are no yellow exclamaition marks against the USB slots.

Also, are these devices (mouse, keyboard, usb cradle) plugged directly into your computer's USB port, or into a USB Hub?

If it's a Hub, is it line powered (from the USB port on your computer), or A/C powered from the wall outlet?

If it's A/C powered, I would check to make sure you are not loosing A/C power from a bad connection at the wall or elsewhere. If the hub is line powered, I would see if moving the USB connector at your computer from the current port to another port resolves the problem...

Same thing happened to my 4700 this week. I tried reinstalling everything and nothing worked. I then remembered to check the time with the DST change and found updates and patches and installed them, but still didn't work.

Out of desparation I Ran Memory Maid or whatever it's called along with any other utility I have installed that sounded like it was meant to clean up my 4700 and rebooted. Guess what all works fine again.

Not sure what the problem was.

Unfortunately, Soft (and HARD) Resets are not performed quite as often as they should be during the troubleshooting process...

This may sound obvious/stupid but I had the same issue. I rum wm5 but I noticed lately that for whatever reason the activesync icon was greyed out with my 4700 connected to my PC. I right clicked on the activesync icon and selected connetion settings. In there was a check box for "allow USB connections" which was not checked. I checked it on and my 4700 could sync up no problem.

I don't know if this is your issue, but it might help. If anyone knows why from time to time this checkbox gets disabled (happens a lot to me) please fill me in.

I have a similar problem with bluetooth. I never could get connect activesync via bluetooth with 2003se . I upgrade to wm5 and the pc to vista. the very first time I try bluetooth its connect perfect. Yeah!!! baby . but several days later stop working !! dammmiiittt. no more bluetooth for me? back to to the cradle. I use the cilicone cover (I recomended to everybody fits perfect and looks supercool with the flipscreen cover) and hate every time that have to take out for cradeling.
