Soft resets turn into a hard reset

Lately my ipaq has been acting very strange- i thought it was a brick for about a week... it turned on once and would not get past the HP splash screen... i started fooling and found that if i waited long enough- maybe a few minutes, the splash screen would go away and i would end up with the windows welcome screen after a hard reset... i reinstalled all my programs and things were good until i had to soft reset. same thing happened. it seems like every time i soft reset the device- either through software or through the button, it will hard reset instead...
any ideas?

maybe backup battery is dead?

i'm using WM5... i thought the backup batery didn't matter with that...
What i did last night was try to reflash it... i ended up bricking it... then i unbricked it putting the original 2.00 WM5 on, and still the same problem. i'm going to see if i can put WM2003 back on and see what happens...

Mine just started doing the soft hard reset thing today, too. What gives?
