rw6828 - Speaker failure - sent for repair

Top speaker (used for the phone/alarm/pda tones) stopped working!
Hope this is a one-off.
I returned the unit to the place of purchase on 22 July. I purchased it on the 31 May (so I got 2 months out of it). I't will be interesting to see what they fix/replace! Shop said it was the first returned so far. they expect it will take 10 days to return (Australia!)

LOTS of reports of this problem around:

I have had this happen too, but intermittently. Blowing hard into the jack (with a can of compressed air) or repeatedly reinserting the headset has fixed it for me. Will bite the bullet and send it for repair at some stage in the next few weeks. From all these other reports it looks like it is a simple hardware problem with the audio jack. I had also wondered if it might be a software problem (i.e. interpreting the status of the jack) - but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Let us know how long it takes to get your unit repaired in Australia (my location too).

Will let you know

I had to send it from Perth to Queensland to get fixed......Some third party repair place.
I hope they actually fix it and dont just do the workaround....

I'm curious to know if you have it back yet? I work for HP and I also own one of these new PDA's and haven't had a problem as yet. Let me know if it gets repaired ok.

Its on the way...

Spoke to the retailer today 31/7/06 and they said it was being sent back from repair today (Queensland). It should take a few days to get here (Perth).
They mentioned that they replaced the "PFH Socket" (whatever that is! ).

I'm hoping that it has fixed the problem (for good!).

I'm guessing they meant "PHF", standing for "portable hands free".

Got it back!

The unit arrived in the shop yesterday afternoon and could pick it up today so thats a turnaround of 7 working days for the repair. Not too bad considering it had to go 4000kms and back again. Hope the repair lasts!

Not bad HP...8/10

Good to hear that it came back

Have you tried out the headset a few times?

I haven't had any further problems...but then I haven't been using the wired headset, just bluetooth (and bluetooth stereo headphones too).

The speaker was out of action for a day and then came back again. Since then it has not happened again.

I got mine replaced and have had no issues with the new unit in almost 3 weeks of heavy usage, including a lot of listening to music on planes. I bought one of HP's "Carepaqs" which provides a next day replacement delivered to your door. It was incredibly convenient. When the support engineer was about 15 minutes away he called me to ask if that was a convenient time, then he showed up at my door with a brand new rw6828, helped me hard reset the broken one, and took it away with him. It was really great.

Broken again.....

Guess what! The top speaker stopped working again (no more phone calls).
I have returned it for the second time to get repaired by HP, Last Thursday 26 Oct.
I'll be without it for another two weeks.

So I've had it for 5 months and It's been in for repair for one month. Its been out of service for 20% of the time. Not too happy about that. Especially as the retailer will not take the unit back at this stage. I need to look into this, as IMHO, the unit is not of merchantable quality.

We will practice the definition of insanity yet again. “Do the same thing over and over again, and expect a different result”

If anyone has any experience with consumer affairs in Australia and can give their opinion on how manage the return it would be appreciated. (The unit was purchased from a reputable retailer) Because at the moment I think they are having a bit of a lend of me...

Sorry, I'm no expert on consumer affairs, but thought you might be intested to know that I'm onto my second replacement unit because of this issue.
