Well, next month when Apple releases the SDK, I think it will probably be a lot more than just a MP3 player, and I "jailbroke" mine, which for those who are not familiar with such a term, it means to "hack" your iPod Touch or iPhone to make it use programs that developers have come up with. Then, it is definitely much more than just an Mp3 player, there are some really nifty apps out there. And, the screen totally is better than anything else I've ever seen, it makes any PDA look like the worst screen in the world, though my Zire 71 (RIP) had a screen that was close, the Touch is just way better, and with extra apps, PDAs don't even come close. However, I do want to know what Apple was thinking by not including a speaker. That would have been a really nice feature to have. So, in some areas the PDA is better, but in most areas, the iTouch is already better and it is way beyond any mobile device on the market today, IMO.
The iToush is nice (I'm waiting for the iPhone in Canada because I want one device).
For those who want third party apps, calendar, email client, etc. - more than a glorified iPod - your iTouch CAN BE THAT. All you have to do is visit a site on your iTouch, "Jailbreak" it (it's a very easy software thing and not too risky) and add all the great apps you want, including iPhones calendar app.
I've had PDA's as long as I can remember (Palm, Dell Axims, now and HTC) and the OS has always seemed slow, clunky and problematic (locking up, soft reset, hard reset). The current line of PDA phones (I have one) appear to be running on really old technology.
Why do we keep going back to Microsoft? Third party apps, that's it. In essence they are the worst devices out there.
Me, I bought a Macbook a few months back, and I am hooked. I love it. This weekend, I bought my parents a used iMac (their PC keeps slowing down due to spyware and the like, this will save me having to reformat their HD every year and a half), and the moment the iPhone hits Canada, I'm there.
I know some MS and WM users will just say I've jumped on the bandwagon and have my head in the clouds. But I am glad for threads like this which point out that most of the time, we continue to bend over for MS, keeping our heads in the sand at the same time.
Let's be honest, let's stand up and not take it anymore. How long will MS continue to get rich because we'll buy wahtever they make (at least Vista bombed big time)?
I've been in love with my iPhone, and there are maybe 50 ipod touches around school now...... so popular.
I agree with the original poster; I actually haven't touched my Ax in a very long time, only once for GPS navigation. My iPhone is unlocked and jailbroken, and I'm lovin' it. This is the first apple product I've owned, besides a Nano which I received as a gift and never used. I absolutely detest Mac OSX on desktop, but I love it on iPhone/iPod Touch.

The iPod Touch was more or less Apples way of getting PDA's to the masses and having it be cool again.
The Newton was impressive, but it was released as a PDA and people thought it was dorky.
So there long term view might have switched to another way to get to everyones pockets.
Well most people were starting to have music all the time everywhere, so the got there through MP3 players that became so cool and great they were like Pens, everyone had a few and threw them away after a year. So then the plan for an Apple phone became the challenge of making a Smartish phone that wasnt dorky, so it was more or less a iPod with phone capabilities. So now everybody not only wanted an iPod, but a iPhone.
So with a simple software update Apple was able to make these devices into fully fledged more or less PDAs and no young hipster the wiser that they are joining the crowd of PDA carriers.
Just my opinion
