I was an Apple Zombie back in the day, switched over to PC's around the time OS 8.5 was released for 2 main reasons - My new IT job (all Windows of course) and Steve Jobs killing the Newton (will never forgive him for that - it was outside of Apple and he pulled it back in to kill it for heaven's sake!). Being a PDA freak, it was either Palm or WinCE, and at that time Palm was far too limited, and WinCE was far less limiting but still sucked (anything would have compared to Newton OS 2.x - not that that version ever got a fair review and Apple nhad thus far neglected to go for smaller devices, but I could go on for a page and half on that!).
Anyway, the iPod Touch is the first Apple device that I think I will be buying soon in all that time apart from a 3rd gen iPod a few years ago (and the iPod Touch is as different to a 3rd Gen/traditional iPod as a product can possibly be and still officially be different versions of the "same" device line...). And yes, I saw an iPhone and played with one before the Touch. And yes, I know they are the "same" minus the phone - but for whatever reason, the iPhone did NOT have the effect on me that the Touch did. I still haven't figured out why (maybe I do have some underlying distrust of all in one's that goes deeper than I realize). ANyway, if you've tried an iPhone - don't automatically assume you know what a Touch FEELS like. It's similar, but diffferent. Better!
A lady at work bought one and being the resident PDA (and gadget) freak/geek, she brought it to show it to me...and I fell in love!!! <<cue happy playful music and slow mo scenes of my face lighting up as I play with it!!!>>
Seriously tho, after just a few minutes playing with it, I honestly (absolutely serious here) felt like my Axim - or more precisely, Windows Mobile - was an antiquated klunky UI that I was suddenly over like I have never been. This is hard to explain (and please don't let the fact I was an AppleHead 13 years ago make you think I'm one of those JobJobs that worship all things Apple and have more hatred and disgust for PC users than a KKK bigot at a gay march - I am NOT like that by any means!). And I love my Axim x51v (loved?)! I have a custom made flip cover (made from a damaged iPAQ 2000x series - I also get all the old/broken devices as well), I even upgraded it to a certain version of the OS that (censored). WinMobile Standard has never been an option for me - and I have yet to find a Classic better than (or even on par with) the x51v (esp. upraded) and similarly, I can not find a phone device that doesn't sacrifice some major features. I still think the x51v is the best WindowsMobile hardware out there (that new iPAQ 210 was sooo close - nice, but still not totally equal to the x51v). If I haven't convinced you I am a WinMobile evangelist by now, I'm not going to, so on with the Touch...).
First off, I couldn't get over how tiny it is! It is seriously small! The design is the epitome of elegance - and I think most people will agree Apple usually succeeds at having nice looking products (despite what you think about the OS). But using it - it's just an experience you truly can't put into words for someone who hasn't experienced it. And the people that will truly appreciate this are hardcore PDA users (novice users aren't going to realize how amazing this UI truly is, having no frame of reference). I honestly thought I liked using a stylus - HA! Using the Touch made me realize that he designers of the original PDA's (and yes, that includes my beloved Newton) should have skipped stylus-based input completely (or at least made it a rarely needed method for the rare app linking to a desktop or some such). It was a revelation of how a Touch Screen device should be, and how it makes use of the input option that the vast majority of us will always have readily available!
I agree that the screen blows the Axim away. What makes this all the more impressive is that the x51v has a higher res screen! But despite the "lo res" Touch screen (I believe it is 320x480 - same as hi res Palms and my elderly MesagePad 2000), everything is crisp, clear, sharp and beautiful. The color and quality are second to none. As if ripping my formerly-preferred UI to shreds wasn't enough, it also had to make my VGA screen (another "bragging point" of mine for the x51v, even tho I wil concede the iPAQ 4700 has better color saturation) look dim, dull, and tho clear and functional, the Touch's screen is warm and inviting!
And what truly blew me away - the speed! No, make that performance. Everything was utterly smooth and fluid and absolutely responsive. I had assumed (unconsciously I now realized consciously!) that the commercials upped the performance or showed it in a absolute best-case scenario or some such - but it actually works that way all the time! And this was after she had synched her contacts and calendar and loaded it up with tunes and stuff - and it just worked - no pauses, no delays - I don't even think it has a "clock" or cute little pie-wheely or thermometer as it's not needed! If it does, I never saw it.
I really never thought I'd be all Gaga about a device's UI or overall feel and response. But I am over the Touch. ANd I will have one - just as soon as Apple releases their Draconian hold on 3rd party apps! Grrr Argh!!!
As soon as Kim left with her Touch, I jumped online to see if it could replace my Axim x51v (I had read some reviews and such, but never seriously considered that I might ever buy one - especially to *replace* my x51v - so I wasn't sure on the app status). My x51v is an integral part of my professional (And I admit personal) life. I absolutely rely on the calendar, email (Exchange ActiveSync wirelessly with our Exchange server), Notes (I'm always surprised how many people never seem to use Notes - I have a LOT of stuff to remember and a bad memory I guess - tho I don't store security risks in them), contacts and the occasional Terminal Services session to fix a click server issue on the many times I'm away from my desk. Unfortunately, the Touch doesnt even have an email client, much less support Excange ActiveSync. And from what I've read, the general belief is that Apple will NOT be supporting these apps or synching options on the Touch even tho they are planned for the iPhone in order to keep "power users" from going to the Touch over the iPhone. WTF? So I have to have an AT&T phone device (which, incidentally does not currently even have coverage in my area!!!!) if I want to have a full device? Actually, not even then, at least not yet, and Ex ActiveSync isn't yet available even for iPhone. I have read Apple intends to revisit their lock down on both devices - and I so hope this is true AND that lots of developers out there will be offering alternatives to WinMobile apps AND functionality for the Touch (oh, and iPhone too, sure). But I've read that developers are iffy about this as Apple could just come out with an update, offering it all for free - and sabotaging their hard work and development and any hope of recouping the $$$ devoted. I can see this happening *if* 3rd party developers bring out these apps/options for the Touch - but not if they don't (and that's a personal intuition, not based on anything).
So the bottom line is - I LOVE the Touch - the design, the execution - THAT GORGEOUS UI - it's just light years beyond anything else anywhere. It feels like a natural extension to me (for real). But in reality - it simply can not replace my Axim x51v WM6 - at least not yet. It's no technical limitation - simply a lack of developed software. I would like BT added so I can link to my Phone on the off times that no WiFI is around (and am I the only one who thinks Apple is way behind offering BT stereo headsets? Such an advanced device as the iPod - especially th Touch - cries for wireless headphones! WHat's up with that? It's like requiring laptops to be plugged in all the time because the makers didn't think to include a battery. Okay, not that harsh, but you know what I mean!).
As soon as this baby has the options available - and I mean the INSTANT - I will be buying one and synching and I daresay never looking back at WinMobile. Even my Newton I turn on every now and then and revisit that interface (which until the Touch - STILL has not be equalled by ANY other PDA platform). But WinMobile's "functional" approach is less than endearing, and as such my x51v will be part of my "Teknocathica" (yeah, probably misspelled) but I won't miss the OS. And I'm really ashamed to say that I wait for MS to copy the cooler innovations when they come out on other platforms (or for someone to). In this case, there's no way to "copy" the UI because it is built in from the groundup - no adding on as an afterthought is possible to get the level of...excellence that the Touch experience entails (and yes, I've tried the iLauncher and Slide2Lock and such...it's cute, but about as true to the real iPod Touch experience as collecting Doctor Who figures is representative of a real trip in the TARDIS! :-)
I want this - I want it bad, and I want it now - but I want it to be my primary - my only - gadget apart from my Phone. So come on Apple - open these platforms up and then bring on the ActiveSync support (pretty please with Macintoshes on top!) and/or 2rd parties support it - and I foresee WinMob going the way of the Palm!
