Just got an iPod Touch
Well, I've been mulling over getting an MP3 player for a while, and finally took the plunge as my curiosity over the touchscreen gestures got the better of me. It's my first Apple product, so a particular friend of mine and Apple evangelist out in greater San Fran will not doubt be pleased. I have to say the responsiveness and ease of use of the device is IMHO spectacular. I had my doubts, but I'm impressed.

It was very easy to configure the built-in VPN client to connect to our MS network, but I wish the Microsoft Exchange client/setup worked with out network. I'm sure we could get it working by tweaking the exchange server, but that will have to wait.

I wish the Touch had bluetooth for keyboard use for emails and such, but oh well. Though I'm not sure how I feel about being locked into iTunes, but I don't like the Apple Store's lack of trialware for purchased addons.

Just my 2 cents...

congrats on your new device. i would suggest jailbreaking it for more fun/customization

i understand where youre coming from with regard to itunes, however i think the appstore and the whole idea of it is great. theres soo much software on there and the ability to purchase and install right from the device is wicked.

unfortunately, theres not too many apps that have a "light" free version of the software. my only recommendation would be to read a lot of the reviews and take a look at the screenshots/ associated web site for a greater understanding (and sometimes video) of the functionality of the product

have fun with your device!!

I heard that the iPod Touch had problems and was not a good i-pod to get. But from all the ppl I know that have one, they seem to work just fine.

I love the Touch, but got a Classic instead. I have so many songs that I wanted more capacity. Even the 80GB seems too small now. What size storage did you get, Breley?

I love iTunes. It's so easy to use and works great. I have only bought one song there. I buy my music sans DRM at mp3Fiesta.com. It has high bit rates and is outrageously cheap.

Are you loving Safari? I figured I had a PocketPc, and the Touch won't sync with my Contact software, Act!, so that's another reason I went with the Classic. If I could sync my contact software with it, and it had more storage, and wasn't so freakin' expensive, I might consider it.

Let us know about your experience.

Direct push/Active Sync with the I-Phone works well for Exchange. Easy to set up also (I've setup several already). Not quite "push" technology but close enough. Never tried with a I-Pod touch, but I would think that it would be the same or similar. Your Exchange server needs to be at a specif SP level for Active Sync to work though.

stevenator65, check out ACT! for the iPhone. It's in development though. BTW, most apps designed for the iPhone will work on the iPod Touch.

I got the 16GB version, and I have to admit the screen clarity and email appearance is spectacular, though there are some occasional issues with emails not properly downloading. There's no apparent task-management, so it's one app per instance. It was great taking this on my flight out to Portland, Oregon, I could watch a number of movies I converted (space was about 350-400MB per 2hr movie using SPB Mobile DVD and then a freeware converter of wmv to mp4), plus mp3s I imported.
At the airport or other wireless hotspots I was able to easily use Safari, which aside from missing flash support did an excellent job of rendering websites. Finger gesturing was much easier than I expected, and I have to admit it was kind of fun sending emails while on the rooftop of a McMenamins pub while putting away some microbrews. It also alerted me to the fiery market crash a few days ago too.

I have one 16Gb and lately I got an iPhone and the added features of the phone make it a very useful device. The best I put my hands on since my Axim X51V.
