Apple itunes DRM goes down.

Brought to you by the same guy who cracked DVD encryption. With correct application, his crack of the itunes copy protection can allow people to play music purchased at the itunes store to play it on non-ipod mp3 players.

Story Link.

Well good for them! Why should I have to use one of their MP3 players to play something that I purchased from their store? That's just plain retarded. For what it's worth, I do own an iPod.

I own an iPod as well but I use the long way to get my songs on other devices.

I purchase the songs I want and download them to my iTunes desktop. After I get so many songs I then burn them to CD via iTunes. I then use my ripper to get them back to MP3.

I am sure there are easier ways but it works for me.

I highly recommend Tunebite it's a great program, fast and easy to use.

TUNEBITE-convert protected WMA, M4P, WMV, M4V, AA, M4B. Free DRM music, video clips & audio books.

Still, this is not hidden from consumers. Everyone knows that if you buy an iPod and use iTunes then this is what you get. No trickery here.

Couldn't you play them in winamp? Winamp has Wave Disk Writer plugin which converts anything you play into Wave very fast. If it didn't work with Winamp, sorry, I never ever bought a single song from iTunes, and I don't own an iPod!

Pretty simple really. Don't buy music from iTunes. I've got about 30GB of music on mine, and it's all in MP3 format. It plays on anything.

I wish Steve Jobs would use his influence to persuade the record labels to do away with DRM by first getting rid of DRM on songs from independent labels that do NOT want DRM on their music.
