Laptop RAM is sure cheap these days. Is there anything proprietary or unusual about Dell laptops that would make adding RAM to one a problem? It's cheaper to order one with low RAM and then buy more at the local computer store right now.
Personally, I'd buy the max I could get from Dell and then it would be warrantied. I'd also max the lifespan of the warranty (at least 3 years)
If it were to accudentally fall after 2 1/2 years and fubar the mainboard, odds are that it would be replaced with a newer model (still refurbed of course)

Crucial is a good choice, and Kingston can be as well.

I maxed out my XPS M1210 with a Patriot 2GB X 2 last year... As of now, I don't have any problem. I used my laptop for development and running VMWare's OS.
Interesting... SP1 allows a full 4 GB to be recognized? 32 bit or 64 bit?
I have 4GB of RAM on my desktop, but only 3.5 is recognized, since it counts total memory, including video memory, and I have a 512 MB graphics card.
Do you have integrated graphics (and therefore shared graphics), or does it actually increase addressable RAM?
I have a 32bit Windows Vista Ultimate [Pre-installed on my XPS M1210].
Yes I do have an integrated graphics, its a 256MB NVIDIA Go 7400. With out the SP1 its only 3326MB. I know that this a know bug on Windows OS. Hopefully the additional RAM that I reclaim will physically help boost my laptop.
