Humm - graphic design -
1st suggestion - there should be someone on campus (faculty) that might have some good suggestions.
2 - To be safe, go with a name brand. Hit CNET and look at some reviews. HP has been a popular laptop brand for a while now.
3 - if you think that you will have some programs that require some major processing power, you might want to get something like a 2.0 dual core CPU. I have a 1.73 dual, and I run some intensive recording programs with no issues.
4 - if it has Vista, at least 2 gigs ram - do not get less.
5 - I would get the biggest HD you can. I have a 105 Gig, trust me - you want something larger.
If you have the cash, get the best laptop you can afford. CNET is a good place to start when looking at reviews.
With that being said, I really like my HP dv6000, although the HD seems a little small.
