For some reason Roxio Creator Software, that came preinstalled in my Vista Laptop, won't recognize my built-in DVD burner. I wish I knew why. But I found a free software that seems to work nicely. It's called BurnAware Free Edition. I wonder if my having downloaded SP1 for Vista has caused a problem? Other programs, such as Windows Explorer have no problem recognizing the burner, so I'm pretty sure it's just Roxio with the problem.
It might be just Roxio. SP1 does have some problems with certain hardware that used to be compatible, but if you have incompatible hardware Wwindows Update shouldn't let you download SP1.
I hope it's not Roxio as I'm about to update my laptop to SP1.
Have you tried re-installing Roxio?

I don't believe in atheists therefore atheists don't exist.
Clegs, Roxio came preinstalled, so as far as I know I don't have the software disc to reinstall it. Let me know how it goes for you. Meanwhile, the freebie software I found works fine.
I put SP1 my vista box, but haven't tried burning anything yet.
I'll check it out today.
BTW, Roxio is crap bloatware. I'd suggest Nero for a full featured app suite. Otherwise there are several freeware apps that are fine for burning dvd media

I didn't want to spend $100 on Nero. Which free burning softwares do you recommend?

The program is available for $495, but it will be free for our visitors as a time-limited offer.

At last a good burning tool other than Roxio that *works* for Windows VISTA. Thanks, GAOTD! StarBurn seems to be what it says; a powerful tool for grabbing, burning and mastering CD, DVD, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD media. So, I’m testing it right now. If any problems occur, I will let everyone know. Thanks again.

I can also attest to Nero's superiority. I definitely recommend it...
