Laptop suddenly can't connect
All has been well for the two months I have had my new laptop (running vista home premium) Then all of a sudden yesterday it can't connect to the internet. It can sometimes connect to my home network for a short period, but it can't keep the connection and it won't connect to the internet at all. (Signal strength is 90%)

I have tried:

reseting router
virus scan
system restore to a point before the problem

The desktop, my ipaq and the vonage phone all connect to the router/internet with no problems.

Any suggestions or words of wisdom???

TIA

Wendy, you may have tried this, but I'll suggest it anyway. Try CCleaner and Lavasoft Adaware. Both are free.

Do you usually connect wirelessly or ethernet? Try connecting ethernet and see how it goes. I hope someone else can assist as well, b/c I am not great with networking.

Wendy, what WLAN utility are you using to connect to the network?

If it's a DELL laptop, you will probably be using the DELL utility and you can use the diagnostic utility to check your connection. If not, log on as an administrator and try the Window utility to try and repair the connection.

Well, here's an update...

I decided to try to see if my laptop's mac address was in my routers security, so I entered the string of numbers to access the router and got a "webpage not avaliable" message. So then I reset my router and still got that message I hooked up the laptop directly to the router with an ethernet cable and was able to temporarily get the internet and then it wouldn't work anymore. I then hooked up directly to my modem and was able to get online. Then I put everything back like it was and my vonage phone, desktop and ipaq were fine (the only problem is I have no security anymore), but the laptop would not hook up to the network.

Fast forward to this morning...tired to use the phone and ipaq...nothing worked. Went to the basement to discover the router was on, but the modem was on standby. I powered the modem on and viola, everything works including the laptop. Very bizarre.

So now I need to attempt to reset the router security. Wish me luck.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm wondering if my router is flaking out on me. It is three years old.
