Dell Inspiron E1405/640M 4GB of Ram!

I am sure most people know this already but just wanted to share my experience. I recently purchased a used Dell Inspiron E1405/640M on ebay for a great price, it came with Windows XP pro and 1GB of ram. I decided to upgrade the memory, went to Crucial and they said that the laptop would accept 2 x 2GB sticks at PC25300 (DDR2 667). Dell's website states that it will accept sticks in 128, 256, 512, 1gb and 2 gb but with a maximum of 2GB at PC24200 (DDR2 533). I went out on a limb and bought the 2 gb sticks. I upgraded my laptop's Bios to A10 and installed the 4GB of ram. I know that with a 32 bit system the laptop will not recognize the full four gigs but it does recognize 3.24 GB. i loads everything much faster and is very stable. Hope this helps someone, thanks

@bfuentes:
Thanks for this useful information!
I bought two SO DIMM 2, 2048 MB, 667 MHz from Kingston and got 3.24 GB real memory size with Windows Vista x86. I am using the old bios version A09.

Glad to hear it. I decided to upgrade my system to vista business but rather than install over the top of my existing harddrive I purchased a new 7200 rpm drive from Newegg. I installed vista business sp1 (got the dell oem disk on ebay) and it is running incredibly fast. I am going to test and see how well it does with daily use. I know many people hate vista and as a repair person it has been a nightmare on the laptops i have fixed but we'll see what happens.

thanks

I have 4gbs on my laptop but chose to get 32 bit vista.

Sure 64 bit is out there, but i can always upgrade later. I use some older software and devices and was worried about compatibility issues.

Vista only shows 3068MB of RAM total in CTRL ALT DEL.
I will probably upgrade to 64bit Windows 7 when it comes out and ditch Vista all together. All i know is, Microsoft better get their act together soon, or I am going to Linux.

I have just recently installed 4GB of ram in my Inspiron 640m, with Windows 7 x64 RC build 7100 installed, and it works just fine

Here is the memory I bought from Newegg (Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory Model CT2KIT25664AC667)

Windows 7 system properties shows 4GB of memory installed, with 3.24GB usable, presumably because of the shared video memory taking up some of that 4GB

That 4GB (up from 1GB) upgrade plus a new snappy 320GB seagate hard drive has breathed new life into my laptop
