I'm dl'ing the Win7 RC now and the VirtualXP machine to go with it... I did like the last beta, but there was too many missing features in that build.

Wendy, look into a product called virtualBox, which has a mac client and will allow you to run a virtual PC environment for windows apps... (I don't know if it will provide access to USB ports for Activesync)

Well, so far I'm impressed with almost everything. I'm pleased with how easy it has been to pick up on a different operating system. I was up and running right out of the box within a few minutes without any major headaches. Both hubby and I are impressed with how well the machine is built (but I guess that has nothing to do with the operating system )

As for software, I set down and made a list of what I had bought for the Windows machine already and what I really used all of it for. When it came down to it, I was using:

Office 2003
Mastercook Deluxe (a $10 cooking program)
An old copy of photoshop elements that someone gave me
Homeschool Tracker + ($35)
A Diet & Fitness app ($50 for both desktop & ipaq)

So really don't have that much $$ tied up in applications. Less than $250. After all, I'm just a homeschooling mom...not an engineer with lots of high cost applications So having to purchase a few new applications didn't bother me that much. The cooking program I don't even need to replace since most of that stuff is online anyway. I was able to find a diet program for the itouch for free that is almost as good as the one I paid for. I bought iworks for $79 that has the word processing & spreadsheets programs in it (that will also allow me to create docs and save them as word/excel docs). I am using iphoto right now, but I will probably invest in something else later...I can get photoshop elements 6 for $70, photoshop lightroom for $100 or photoshop cs4 extended for $300. But that will be later. The only other thing I will have to buy within the next few weeks is a lesson planning program.

All in all I'm quite happy.

Took me about 2 hours using Linux to REALLY appreciate how powerful Windows is. Desktop Linux is a crude imitation. Ubuntu and Fedora reminded me of Windows 2.0 and the applications look, well, amateurish in their quality. No thanks. Vista on a bad day is 10 times better than any version of Linux, IMHO.

Really?

Everybody is always saying how easy things are with Linux, about how everything is P&P, no drivers needed, its faster than Windows.

This is good to know.

Linux is a geek playground.

Sure there are a few desktop GUI (like KDE) that provides a helpful desktop experience for a more user friendly environment, but it is NOT a pnp dummy environment.

Drivers will always be an issue
apps will be an issue

(Issue meaning for the typical luser)

If you like playing with drivers and searching for linux apps and tweaking config files and playing system analyst for your home network, then linux is fine...

For granny that buys a PC at the local compuhut, linux isn't the best solution.

Windows tries to be everything for everyone, which uses more resources costs performance and security
Mac wants to be everything for a select few iSheep (as long as you buy overpriced, ice-white iProducts it is easy)
Linux lets you decide what you want to have/use (assuming you know what that is and you know how to do it)

I have multiple devices running a variety of OS's. An all in one with XP & Ubuntu (Linux), two old laptops running two different versions of Linux (why? because I can), two desktops - one with XP and one with Knoppix (Linux), a laptop with Vista, an Axim X51v with WM 6.1 and a couple of HTC Vogue cells with WM 6.1 & one with Android (not fully functional), a variety of iPods; an iPod touch; and a MacBook.
What I have discovered is: many people take their OS of choice as a very personal thing; some will flame about it as well; there are many choices in OS and many involve no cost to the user. Use the OS which your equipment works best with and you enjoy using. That said, I have things I enjoy about most I have tried...and given the option...I normally run Linux.
