Aside from the fact that they make a TON of money on their proprietary cables and accessories ... Is there any reason why all (camera's, phones, PDAs) devices can't just use a USB connector for data and power transmission?

All the new Blackberry's are going that direction.

Why does the Axim need a 36pin connector (aside from Video out)???

It's the oldest trick in the book. Try and make the connector as complex and different as possible so that more people are forced to buy your accessories. Everyone could be using a usb connector on their PDAs.

I just had my Axim repaired to the tune of 72 bucks because of the stupid pins on the bottom. Of course my warrentee ran out a few months ago. Dell offered me squat even admitting the unit was poorly designed. Bastards!

True , my X50V stopped charging vic cradle months ago and now I use it for charging batteries. I got three, 2250 mAH one and 1100 mAH two. Now my X50V is truly mobile 24x7. I wished that instead of 36 pin charger if Dell would have provided simple universal Nokia like charger, only to charge it would have been greatest for this otherwise SUPERLATIVE pda. Earlier I had Treo 600, which I sold on ebay for almost 1/3 of purchase price very soon. I spent fortunes on Palm OS and all so Palm in general, I have wowed never be entrapped in whatever Palm forever. Don't wan't to try anything Palm even for free!

I started with a Handspring - I hada Visor Pro with the phone, modem, presenter to go, and a bunch of other cards - two cradles (Home and Work) and cases, cables, etc. galore. Then I switched to a Palm T-3 and duplicated most of that stuff... Now I've got an Axim X51V and it will start all over again...

and that doesn't even mention all the software....
