We have seen it in movies and probably read it in Sci-Fi books but this is here now. Some laser printer Makers are going to have integrated coding on every print so it is traceable to the originating printer. You can read more about this here
Research by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has revealed that some colour laser printers encode the time, date and serial number of every print-out in a coded format that can be read by US government agencies.
According to the EFF, the US Secret Service has admitted that it arranged for information to be encoded, but declined to say what information was stored.
The EFF has now decoded the information, which it claims includes the time and date of printing and the serial number of the printer making the image.

well I knew that printers left tell tales.. but i always thought they were accidental. Interesting to see that it's by design.
Kinda makes you wonder what else we miss

PocketBrain,
Thanks for the link, it is very interesting and informative. It seems like BIG BROTHER is always watching and tracking our every move. Makes me wonder how long it will be before they begin coding the Toilet paper
It's to help track the counterfeiters. Some colour copiers will shut down if they recognize money being copied. They then have to send out two different tech's, each with a different code, to get the machine up and running again.

Yeah some programs won't let you play with money anymore either. The newest version of Adobe Photoshop stops working if you try and work on a picture of money... I mean, it's possible to work around it (we needed a picture of a dollar for an ad we were doing), but it's a pain none-the-less...
yah.. they became careful after this one Canadian guy used photoshop 6 to print 50 and 100 dollar bills. and with this kindda smart devices, privacy will be a thing of the past.

I wonder how difficult it would be to "fill in" the matrix of dots with more dots...essentially making the printer print a full matrix and thus negating the entire scheme. Hmm...
