Review: Arkon DM320 Series Mount

Thinking of getting GPS set up on your Axim for Christmas? Having trouble figuring out whether to take a left or a right? Jake Richards, our resident GPS expert, has made it his mission to provide Aximsite members with knowledgeable, understandable and interesting reviews on all products associated with GPS systems.

Today, he's going to take you through the highlights of Arkon's new DM320 series Mount. Here's a taster of what Jake thought about it:

"Arkon has a pretty good mount here! It holds my PPC in place snugly, provides power and sound amplification, and is well made. Fit and finish were excellent, as was overall quality. Sound settings were finicky, but with some work it has a good sound." ~ Jake Richards

Review: Arkon DM320 Series Mount

We hope you enjoy it; please do give us feedback.

This seems like a very nice unit but I was wondering if it will provide power for a Bluetooth GPS unit as well as the Axim?

Jake-

Excellent review. I have the unit also, and am still fiddling with the various volume controls to try and get it right. I have managed to get it to sound "better," but I'm still tinkering.

hosps-

There is not power jack for a BT GPS unit. I bought a dual outlet adapter at Radio Shack (about $8.00) and it works at up to 10 amps. It's come in handy with this mount for both my GPS and for my Cell Phone--although not at the same time of course.

Thanks for the information. I'll take a closer look at this unit. I've wanted to get a GPS/PDA mount for awhile and this is the closest I have seen to a perfect unit.

Jake - Thanks again for the review.

I am guessing this unit will not fit an X50v with a 2200 mHA extended battery?

EDIT: Based on Jake's comments below, it looks as though there isn't room for even that. You live and learn...

Well done as usual, Jake! :approve:

Is this for 50 series only, or will x30 fit? I guess I could look at the web site.

Re: Review: Arkon DM320 Series Mount

From the review and Arkon's website, I can see that this mount has the Axim's connector. My question is, can you remove the connector to swap it with say, a connector for an iPaq? I've been holding off buying a custom mount (or any accessories that require the Axim connector) as I've been disappointed in the past when the manufacturer changes form factors and/or connectors and I'm left with accessories that no longer work with my new device.

The reviewed unit is for the X50/51 series only. The connector did come out, but I don't think it's designed to be removed by the end user. It was difficult to get it back when I did get it removed. I recommend against it. You can get a unit with an X30 connector.

Also, I doubt seriously that any extended battery or case will work. I don't use an extended battery, so I can't test, but the fit is very snug behind the unit and if you put too much pressure on the connector only bad things can happen (bent, broken connector on eitehr Axim or mount).

two question

1: can you post a picture of the unit w/o your axim? i'd like to see what the connector looks like etc

2: when you click on your name at the top of the review, the link points to: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Jake/My%20Documents/Aximsite%20Reviews/seidio/%5BLINK%20TO%20PM%20OR%20EMAIL%20%28No%20mailto.%2 0%20Link%20to%20Aximsite.com%20email%20form%29%5D

Arkon is OK but SEIDIO Totally Rocks. Mucch more custom Look. The Gripper Jaws on the Arkon is so Old School. I gots the 2500 mount and the new 4000 is even more awesome. There are 2 versions one with a Sirf 3 receiver and one without. They gots a price prom goins on now.

*2500 is on sales for $50
*4500 is on sales for $60
*4850 with sirf 3 is $150

If you ask me that is totally smokin. I bought my 2500 a few months back for almost $80.

Trust me Kiddies go with the Seidio over the Arkon.

Come to think of it. For my Glowin Review of Seido Mounts, David should give me a free trade up from my 2500 to a 4500.

Enjoy

The connector looks exactly like the connector in the X50/51 cradle. Which is logical, given that it is the X50/51 connector...

As for the link, thanks for pointing it out. I'll have someone look into it. I don't make that link, I just email the review to have someone post it.
