There was the rumor that Dell was ceasing sales of the Dell Axim line of PDAs right? Yes, I am not discounting any stories published or emails received, but until its officially announced let hold off on the doom and gloom.
I have received over 50 emails of people (some registered members, some not) asking what's next, what do I do now? Well, you own the Axim, it still works (or doesn't)... what's next? Use it and enjoy it for now!
As for development of patches and updates, I am checking on these issues now. I think Dell will stand by their devices until they become obsolete. Wait, are they all obsolete by todays standards already?

I don't even consider my X30h to be obsolete. I think it is still one the fastest PPCs around. And even if Dell pulls out there'll be other PDAs.. we'll live.

One thing to consider is the one reason why so few people upgrade their PDAs... my PDA is the x30 High... it has a 624 Mhz processor and the only upgrades to it would be the next version of Windows Mobile, a VGA screen, USB Host, and/or performance enhancing features (faster processor, etc). There aren't many devices that are better than mine and in fact there are devices releasing right now that are significantly inferior to my device.
Just because newer things are comming along doesn't mean your current device is any less amazing. Just be an informed buyer and keep an eye out for better devices that come along... and hop on anything that seems interesting. :)
If Dell did leave the PDA field though, it would kinda be a pity. They seem to always be pushing the envelope of most powerful devices (giving HP some much needed competition). Less competition in general would be harmful to the market... let's hope that either way some neat devices will come in the future.
Chris! Oh the horror..the tragedy of this. I have sold the clothes on my back and burnt all my cash. Do not tell me I have also joined the Catholic Church for not!!!

im gonna ask a pointless question.
sarcasum?
and i do agree with akheron as my X5 is still an amazing machine! ok, it may not have the VGA screen or the built in wireless features of my X51V but it is still up to the job of running the majority of applications out there for pocket pc's.
its human nature to make devices obsolete by upgrading to the newest and latest gadget and to be fair the basic design of the pocket pc hasnt changed for years. If Dell WERE to stop selling pda's, there are still plenty of good devices out there.
I wonder if this is because their "customer support" complains they cannot understand the customer callers & it makes their job difficult? Good job Dell! :approve: Take care of your employees...no matter where they are...and um...where are they?

Palm is moving to the Windows Mobile scene and it is just a waiting period to adjust until Palm get their first unit out to the public. I am sure Dell will respond quickly on this one. If there is money and profit to make, they will be part of it. The X50 series sold over two million and a half in North America alone. At $500 a pop Mr. Dell won't let this market go at this point in time. The next unit may have phone integrated and maybe Dell's next venture will also be to offer phone services to their customer. All this takes time to put together. My2˘

Exactly why can't Dell come up with a new PC-o-the-week that has bundled with it an Axim that magically does all the iPod and alike stuff? Something along the lines of a tutorial shipping with the device saying where to drop the files and such... that, or they make a conduit for ActiveSync that makes for a right click "send this music file to my Axim's storage card" a reality... or something along those lines...
A large number of people would purchase it because they won't customize their PCs... and then viral marketing could kick in...
My point is... I think there is some room for this market to grow, if somebody managed it effectively, and ironically enough upgraded ActiveSync! :)

It's out already - THe Palm Treo 700w SmartPhone runs WM at $399 (street price).
Dell is a player, but Dell is feeling the development and support crunch - Gateway even beat them to the market with a dual core laptop...

Well, whether there is any truth to the rumor or not, I'd like to think that Aximsite is going to still be standing. I've grown quite comfortable with this site and I'd sure hate to lose it.
Chris! Oh the horror..the tragedy of this. I have sold the clothes on my back and burnt all my cash. Do not tell me I have also joined the Catholic Church for not!!!
You didn't know? We Catholics when we die get unlimited gadget allowences and free software and upgrades forever! The Pope is going to Beatify Bill Gates when he dies so that God can make him fix all of the OS's he has messed up!
And to Chris's point, there are a lot of WAY cooler gadgets coming down the pipes! The Cingular 8125 (<-----drooling), the upcoming HP 6900 series! Cmon everyone! Converged Devices is where it is at! Dell has got to get a move on! Maybe they will be like Cingular and start hitting home runs in the 9th inning!
Lastly, give Chris a break! IF he did know anything HE COULDN'T say anything anyway!!! Leave him a lone to keep improving our forums and bring us new information!
