i hate viruses. i just got one on my inspiron 6000. i have 40 gigs of source code ms-dos batch files and other things.... the biggest hdd i have is 7 gigs so i cannot back anyof it up... s owhen i format the lappys hdd.............. anyone got an ftp server i can use for a few days?
(my 0.02$ here..) maybe the Antivirus companies are writing virii just because they want to sell their antivirus.
That's why they demand an annual fee (and not a one time payment) for their products..
not to point at anyone.. but this makes heck of a lot of sense. I was thinking of the same thing. Not too many antivirus products out there for the Pocket PC platform. Just imagine thousands and thousands of people buying from only a few companies..

I dont think you are seeing the bigger picture here. What if a virus were to create / change all the items in your pim @ sync?
Changing the njumber / address / dates / events to random will be noticable, and anoying, but if done as part of the sync process (or after detecting a sync) it would propagate into outlook, potentially causing huge problems.
Now then, next senario. A writer lets lose a virus to corrupt everyones backups. How about a virus which attacks PDAs / Phones at the same date, creating a huge DOS attack against various 'corps'.
Or a virus which will use up all ur payg credit? Or runs up a huge contract bill phoning premium rate numbers?
Its not just a case of hard reset, you also need to find out where the virus came from, is it in the backups, in some word doc u need to work on... So many possibilties....
The terrorist attack of 9/11 was tested 10 years earlier. These viruses are a multitude of tests before the big hit, viruses sent out in batches to disable all major systems backboned by computers - banks, stock markets, security systems, etc etc, entirely crippling the western world.
I haven't researched, but how many people have actually been arrested and convicted for computer viruses?

EXACTLY...why the heck would symantec create this. of they didn't know something we didnt?
MARCH 01, 2006 (IDG NEWS SERVICE) - A mystery is deepening around a report about the emergence of a virus that can pass from a PC to a mobile device, with some antivirus vendors saying they have not seen the code to confirm it.
The Mobile Antivirus Researchers Association (MARA) said Monday it anonymously received the code, named "Crossover." Microsoft Corp., whose software the virus reportedly affects, said Wednesday it is investigating the reports but has not heard of any customer complaints.
MARA officials were not immediately available to comment further.
Antivirus vendors said they will update their software to detect and remove the virus if they are allowed to analyze it. While vendors typically send virus samples to each other to update their products, MARA has not been forthcoming with a sample, said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos PLC.
At the moment, the antivirus community only has MARA's word that the virus exists, Cluley said.
"We would still love to see a sample of this and determine if this is a potential threat to our customers," Cluley said. "It's a little bit disappointing that they are not sharing the sample."
The virus, MARA said, is the first one engineered to infect a Microsoft Windows desktop computer and then pass to a mobile device running the Windows CE or Mobile software, subsequently erasing files.
Well, I have said from the begining that a virus like the one described by MARA is the stupiest thing that I have ever heard. It's like saying that any program with a Hard Reset by software option is a virus!
