They want to market these as the boot drives in laptops first....then maybe have multiples for multimedia storage...a PDA with 32 gigs would be he perfect device for me...a good OS and room for goodies.

Doesn't Flash memory have limited writing ability, as in each sector can only be written to x amount of times before it is marked unusable? I can't see these being used in a device that isn't replaced as often as an mp3 player.
I researched this issue a few weeks ago. About two years ago they perfected the technology to allow these 'drives' to have a MTBF of 500,000 to 1,000,000 hours. This is comparable to many hard drives. Through protective burn-in methodolgy and more resilent memory technology, this seems to provide a pretty stable media format.
On the downside is the expense. Presently, per gig cost is approximately 20 times the rate for spinning disk techology.
But, as these companies promote, once solid-state non-volatile media gets main stream, scales of economy will kick in and price will begin to drop.

:approve: i'd like to see a CF or SD version that my x50v can access. I'll worry about a new PDA later. Just spent too much on this one to replace it anytime soon. at least voluntarily...
Ar... think of the things I could put in my pda if I had 32gb... imagine if they come up with a 64gb one.. or maybe even a 128gb one. Shit... that is hell a lot of space..
the reality of a fully functional - as in Windows/Linux OS that is not scaled down - could be in the future for pocket pcs.
If they were really itching to do this, why didnt they do it when the 8Gb micro drives came out? My last FULL install of XP Pro was about 4Gb.
I dont think we really want a full version of windows on our PDA's. That would just be silly. There are so many things that full OS's offer that would be pointless to have on a PDA. I think it would be nice if we could run win32 apps, but thats about all we would need.
Now 32Gb for pure storage? That would be great! Thanks for the review.

While this is a nice development, I don't see it doing a whole lot to advance PPC as the bottleneck with PPC is the RAM (and battery life). While a bigger ROM is always nice, the x51v has the option of CF and SD cards for additional storage. SD and CF are also NAND based. You could store as much as you want in the NAND, but you can't run much if the RAM remains at 64mb - certainly not Windows XP!
The main advantage with large NAND drives is on laptops and even desktop computers - since they are faster than traditional HDs, some components of Windows could be stored on the NAND to allow faster boot-up times. I think there's a HD manufacturer coming out with a HD that includes a NAND component to do just that.

I love it. In addition to the impact to future PDAs, once the technology stable then the aftermarket can offer it as an upgrade to your existing Axim - Yea!!! :yeah:
