Does anyone out there have one and wouldn't mind sharing the feed just to test to see how it looks? Please let me know.
Thanks
Jerry
I'm not sure where you are in the world but if your state side they had a demo at Best Buy (sending from one side of the store to the other). The quality was excellent but there was a lag of about 7 seconds. They might have demos at other leading places (like Good Guys or Comp USA).
It has composite and s-video inputs, not just a tuner. It can take and encode any standard video signal. You could hook it up to a DVD changer if you wanted to, for example. It also has a built-in universal remote. You put the IR emitters from the Slingbox in front of the device to be controlled and you can send it any instructions you normally would from your standard remote from the client. I can literally use, control, and watch my TiVo like I was in the same room using the real remote (except for the network lag, of course). As far as my TiVo knows, I am in the room with the remote. The composite video out from the TiVo is hooked up to the Slingbox, which encodes it and sends it to the client. I see the same thing I would if I hooked to video out to a TV instead of the Slingbox.
They likely have the remote codes for your cable DVR (they have the major ones) already in the box, so yes you would be able to watch and control it just like at home. There are people doing just that.
Wow, it does seem cooler than I thought. So how many of these IR emitters does the slingbox have? Is it just one, in which case you would have to run a cable from the slingbox to the back of your living room so it can point to all devices? Or is it designed so you stick them right in front of the IR receiver of the devices you are controlling?

Probably easier would be for you to buy one and try it from your typical locations (work, home, on the road) and you can always return it within 30 days (or 15 in some stores). Just make sure you know the return policy timeframes. They have them in RadioShak too, I've never ever had a problem returning electornics to RS within 30 days, no restocking fee or any other crap like that.
Trying it right now - it is so AWESOME!! I am working on my laptop at work and I have my Axim on a cradle next to it streaming my TV from home as my personal portable mini-TV. No more just an MP3 player at work ;-)
That is so amazing! I wonder if it works with comcast, I bet it does. We have the dvr with our comcast. I love technology. :)

So how many of these IR emitters does the slingbox have?
It has a cable with two emmitters on it that get attached to the front of the equipment. As long as your two devices are close in the same stack you should be able to control two different devices. You can switch between inputs on the fly.
Is this service any diffrent than what www.orb.com provides for free? With Orb I watch all my home TV shows live on my X51v, plus recorded TV, also I have access to all my music and pictures.
Slingbox is not a service. Its free to use. What you pay for is a hardware box that connects to any A/V device. So you can watch your DVR/satellite/cable/DVD/or anything else you want. With orb, you are limited to watching what you have on your computer. So its much more flexable than orb and you dont need to have a PC running 24/7. Also, the slingblox has 3 video inputs (RF, composite, and svideo). The software allows you to switch easily between the different inputs so you can actually connect 3 devices to the slingbox (however you would only be able to control two of them with the IR blaster). Lastly, the slingbox has a built in analog tuner so you can connect it directly to a antenna or cable feed w/o requiring a set-top-box.
If you ask me, in terms of TV, it does a much better job than ORB. It does not do MP3 or photos (unless you connect it to a digital media server), but I store my most accessed MP3s and photos on my Axim. Besides, you can always still use orb for those things.

I got a slingbox last Christmas and I have been very happy with it. I just downloaded the PPC client today and the video quality is pretty good on my axim x50v.
I will probably use my laptop more than the axim for TV but it is nice to have the option, plus it is just kind of a cool thing to be able to do!
Does anyone know if you need a static IP address at home to be able to use the Slingbox?
Thanks,
Jerry
You do not need a static IP address. Each Slingbox has a 'Finder ID' that it transmits once in a while to the main server so you can always locate your Slingbox based on that Finder ID. If you do have static IP address then you can use that instead of the finder id but it is not required at all. Hope this info helps.
