I really like this Slingbox
Thanks Aximsite.
I saw the thread about Slingplayer Mobile Beta being released. The disease immediately surfaced, and I found myself intently scouring the internet for information on the Slingplayer.
I hit the button on Tuesday, $199 from CompUSA, and today at work the Slingplayer arrived. I spent a relaxing hour setting it up after I got home and worked out. After connecting all the cabling, I took out the laptop, loaded the Slingplayer software, and completed the first time Slingplayer configuration. Right at the end of the installation, the laptop froze. I hard powered off, and when I turned the laptop back on, I performed the setup again. All the information was entered, so a couple of minutes hitting enter, and everything was good.
Then I moved onto the X51v. I installed the Mobile version from my desktop. This wasn't the computer I used to load the Slingplayer desktop software. I'm not sure if my skimming habits got me in trouble, but I didin't recall reading that you had to set-up the X51v from the computer with the Slingplayer desktop version installed. I also didn't realize the Slingplayer mobile became a part of Activesync synchronization. Once the mobile software installed, that's when the error message came up on this desktop stating it couldn't synchronize properly because it couldn't find the installation folder for the Slingplayer desktop version. So I undocked the X51v, installed Slingplayer on this desktop, set it up to find the Slingplayer box, and then redocked the X51v. That completed the installation.
With this new technology, I don't feel like complaining about the less then stellar video performance. It's most definately watchable, but at times it looks like an old beat-up VHS tape. Other times it performs very good. Regardless, what this product does far outweighs any technical shortcomings here in the early stages of it's development. The "brick" doesn't have any DVR capabilities. It delays as expected over the internet - delays in touch response of the remote function and a 2-second audio/video feed delay. But it works. To some this is a toy. To me, there is a toy factor to it, a geek factor, and a "leading-edge" factor. It's a very interesting product, and one I feel just may have a future in the volatile world of technology.
I showed my wife by launching the mobile software on the X51v, and asking if she noticed what I was watching. I showed her I was controlling my Comcast digital box, and that I could watch MY cable from anywhere in the world. She looked at me, and said I had just climbed to the highest gadget freak altitude point in my life.
I'm proud of that.
