Turn your pocket PC into a mobile VoIP phone

VoIPSurfer - VoIP Softphone for Pocket PC

Thanks to all users of this forum that helped me out testing - the product is compatible with most of Dells PPCs:

Axim X30, X3i, X50, X50v, X51 and X51v

The website is online now and can be reached at http://www.voipsurfer.net

The trial version is ready to make free calls to real phones straight away, but limited to 1 minute. Direct download: http://www.voipsurfer.net/download/V...emoInstall.zip make sure to read the readme.txt in the download archive.

If anyone on this forum wants to buy the full version, send me a private mail and I will give you a discount until end of April.

Thanks!

This will be Very Nice when they fix the bluetooth on the X51v so then you can use a bluetooth headset to talk to people!

Well, well... it didn't take long for the first person to start using the free minute for prank calls to people. Be warned however I logged your IP. If you are doing it again, I will contact your Provider (Cablevision Systems) and pass it on to their abuse dept.

Concerning headset: Forgot to mention that you should use a wired earpiece or headset when making calls, as otherwise the called party will hear an Echo.

I wasn't the person that made that call, although I do have cablevision, but won't people be reluctant to use it if your logging their calls?

P.S. How many 1 minuite calls do you get?

Oh yeah, and is it available for purchase in the U.S? You only have Euros listed.

Hi Kevin,

we accept Paypal and Moneybookers payments right now. They will deduct the price in US Dollars from your Paypal/Moneybookers account (if that's the currency your account is set to) and tell you how much it is. EUR 24.95 are about US$ 30 right now. There will probably be some resellers in the US shortly, if you prefer that.

The trial allows you to make 20 calls and you're not bound to use our phone server, you can use any IAX VoIP Provider you want (see readme.txt for more details). That's the big difference to competitors, you're not stuck with just one providers rates.

We're planning on offering some kind of a flatrate for US domestic calls too however and it will be lower than US$10 /month.

Concerning the prank call:
I didn't say we're recording calls, we are logging IPs that access our system, just like any website does. The call went out with one of our CallerIDs by mistake (instead of hiding it) and we got a call back from some unhappy person. We will have to think about shutting down the free 1 min. calls (they are meant for testing only anyway) and just have an echo test; or really start thinking about recording the calls. If so we will place a notice at the start of the call of course.

Call me dumb, but I didn't even think that someone would be doing this.

Max

looks good! So is it just a one time pay to buy it or is it that there will be charges for making calls?

Now that would be something, wouldn't it - free calls for the rest of your life for US$30 - unfortunately I can't offer that, though I'd  to

As said above, there will be some kind of flatrate soon or you pay by the minute, which is 1.9c/min (continental USA). But you are free to use other VoIP providers (and there are tons out there).

What you can get for free however is an inbound DID (Washington State number, courtesy of IPKall) which points directly to your Pocket PC, so people can call you on your Pocket PC as well.

Had the same question via email, was that you? ;) Anyway, I'm not sure how exactly your PPC is wired, if it uses ActiveSync for the connection, then the answer is no, as ActiveSync doesn't support UDP unfortunately (only works with TCP).

Make sure to read readme.txt, the dial format is 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx for the US, 0044-area code-number for the UK and so forth.

Max

just wondering. I have a Pretec CF 56 K modem card. Since I already have telephone service at my house. Can I use this program to turn my Axim into a phone to make and recieved calls?

It is technically possible to do this, but it would require you to run a Linux Server at your house, where you install Asterisk (http://www.asterisk.org) or better yet Asterisk@home, a free telephony server software, and in that Linux Server you'd have to put an anolog card (or a digital one, if you have ISDN), which connects to your regular line. Via outbound dialing routes defined in Asterisk you can then dial out with VoIPSurfer on your PPC using either your regular line or VoIP (set up some least cost routing).
This is not something that can be done within an hour however and unless you do not have a Linux Server running 24/7 at your house anyway, it is probably too much effort. Cool as hell though ;)

hth,
Max

Whoa, are you serious!?!?!? I have a linux box!! I just need a modem now. Did you say free? AWSOME!!! I'll try that over spring break!

Edit> I forgot one thing. My linux comp isnt connected to my network. :( Is it possible to use VMWare with that? I do have VmWare.

Edit 2> Yes, you can. Also for free. They actually have a VMWare Virutal Applicance you can use from their website, using the free VmWare Player. I REALLY have to try this now! I just have to get rid of the dialer trojans from my desktop so I can connect the phone line without major costs.

I'd love to try it with my motorola HT820 headset (when x51v's bluetooth stack is upgraded to a proper stack).

The offer looks great!
