Review : Return to Mysterious Island for the Pocket PC
Branden reviews Return to Mysterious Island for the Pocket PC.
This is an amazing puzzle game for the Pocket PC. I had to use a walk through I found online for the PC version to get through a couple parts such as fixing the kiln. I would never have guessed what part I needed or where it was. With even a little line telling me what the thing was I was looking at or what it was made of, I probably would have been able to figure it out on my own. If you play the game, you’ll understand what I mean. Sorry, I don’t want to give it away for those that want to try it on their own.
When I first installed the game, I was amazed at the graphics. The game is very easy to get into and become addicted to. I played it on the bus and the first time I looked up from the game, I noticed we were leaving the stop I was supposed to get off at. While at work, I had to struggle not to grab my PDA and run off to play.

This is a great game. I had to find myself a walkthrough of the PC version in order to complete the game, though. The PPC screen is just so small there are some things you can't see. I bought the PC version of the game after I finished the PPC version. This is an amazing port!
Altough the game is fantastic I must admit I´m more of an old school 2d adventure freak (like Sam `n max, with btw excellent animations!). Like Cheryl already said, qvga is just to small for this sort of games(to much detail in this "pseudo 3d game",vga on the otherhand..)
Im just hoping to see more 2d adventures (hopefully the scummguys will add some more classic vgagames in the future)
I'm not a big game player (read the only game I have played in the last 10 years on a PC or PPC is Obulis, and before that it was Krondor). I bought this a couple months ago, played it a little, had to find and read an online walk through, then gave up on it. Haven't fired it up since until now to check inventory stuff.
The graphics are very nice, which is what sold me, but I have enough frustration in my life without adding the frustration of not being able to even get off the beach in this game. I have all kinds of stuff in my inventory (dried seaweed, 4 oysters, worm, rusty key, lichen, palm tree branches, lens & silver coins). I've even eaten a raw egg or two. I just keep literally going in circles. The walkthrough said I needed to find signs of a fire on the sea cliffs - nope, not me!
Another con - it should have an installer that puts a link in your Program|Games rather than making me do it manually or else always having to go directly to the exe file and tap it.
Just my $0.02 worth.....

You don't find a fire, you have to start a fire. You might want to find a better walk through. There is a place you find that is a little pit that you can start a fire in, but you are the one that needs to start it. You create fire by combining items that burn with items that can start fire and then putting that into the pit you find.

That is true. The installation is very easy (Just copy the folder to the storage card) but it doesn't create a shortcut, which would be nice, in Programs.

Duh! Well, I guess that really cinches it that I am not much of a gamer! I spent too much time looking for the signs of black from the fire on the sea cliffs as that walk through said that it never dawned on me to start my own fire!
I just can't stop laughing about that!
Thanks,

I have recently started playing this game on my x51v and I'm stuck trying to heal the monkey. I have the remedies mixed with water and all I need to do is heat them up. After trying unsuccessfully for 2 days to boil the remedies, I found a walkthrough for the PC version to see if I was doing something wrong and according to the walkthrough, I just need to put them in the kiln to boil, but it won't let me do that. And, yes, I do have my fire going. Does anyone know what I need to do to get these remedies boiled? Is there something besides water I need to combine them with before I put them in the kiln? This is driving me crazy!
I'm still stuck on this. Hasn't anybody here played this game? C'mon guys! Aximsite members know EVERYTHING! I depend on you guys. Somebody must know how to boil the remedies and save the monkey!
Yes, I played the game back when I did the review on it.
I don't remember boiling the remedy to be a difficult task.
It has been about two months since I played that part of the game and I don't quite remember the details of how I did it.
I had to get the monkey a little healthier before he was able to have the remedy. I used a wet cloth as a bandage and gave him a matress I made.
After that, I put the herbs in a container of water and put it in the fire.
I guess I'm going to have to contact the game maker. Maybe this is just a glitch in my copy of the game. I did everything you just said. I made the mattress and gave it to the monkey, I bandaged his head with the clean cloth, and I put the remedies in water. Even according to the walkthrough (PC Version), all I should have to do now is put the two remedy bowls in the fire to boil but it won't let me do that. Every time I try to put them in the kiln, I get the little symbol that represents an invalid action. I'm stuck and can't go any farther in the game until I heal the monkey and restore him to health. Feeding him doesn't work because he won't eat until after he's had the remedies.
Yay! I figured it out. I decided to try giving the unheated remedies to the monkey but accidently chose the bowl of water instead. The monkey took it and after that was willing to eat. After feeding him, he was healed and I've been able to move on in the game.
I guess there are a few differences between the PC version and the PPC version, so the walkthrough I'm checking when I get stuck isn't always helpful. I guess I'll just have to keep trying things until I figure them out.
sorry if i resurrect this old topic, but i'm struk on this game...
