Microsoft addresses Axim WM5 Slowness

The short answer on why Windows Mobile 5 is slow is because the the operating system is running a 'Compaction Thead' on memory in ROM. Mike Calligaro of the Microsoft Windows Mobile team says:

Why are Axim users seeing this so much more than everyone else? That I don't know. The compaction thread is the same on the Axim as on every other WM5 device. It would seem that the Axim is doing something different than other devices. I don't have visibility into their design and can only speculate.

He goes on further to say:

I know that I didn't answer the question you really care about though. "When are you going to fix this?" I'm expecting a lot of angry comments as a result. I'll apologize up front that I don't have an answer to that one.

Well, at least it's an honest answer. It was awfully brave of him to post it publicly. The full article is here.

I agree. I am so tried of dealing with technology people who will not admit to a potential problem on their side. It does give me some relief to read this. Now the next step is to come up with a solution.

Thanks for the post.

Aha! So a way to make it better is to -- just like we used to in wm2003 -- store less frequently used programs on the memory card and keep as much space open, so more sectors may be marked before having to erase them!

When you say Axim, do you mean the x50v or x51v? Or is it model independant?

More RAM is the answer. Properly used, of course.

OK, next problem...

I do believe it is the X50 series due to it's usage of NOR BIS.
