just tried it on my 51v, seems ok but definitely need a headphone. I barely hear what the other guy were saying using the speaker. Is there a separate setting to increase speaker volume in Skype? Or its using the system global volume setting?

All the same, actually. Any volume control an application shows is just a control for the device's volume.

On my X30h its actually too loud. I have to lower the speaker volume or hold it away from my ear. And the sound quality is great! No noise/echo at all.

I've used it on my x51v just like a phone holding it to my face, but I'd rather have my motorola HS850 BT headset working. I have the updates and everything installed, but it just says in grey'd out lettering set as hands-free and I can't click it.
Hey, if you get a gprs card for your axim and a data provider for it, I think you're axim would then be an outgoing cell phone whereever you want to use it, well in the data provider's region, probably a city or 2. I just wish a provider for gprs would have a cheap unlimited plan.
Loaded it up last night on my X51v and got it running in only a few minutes. Sat on the couch, hooked up to my router using wifi, Roadrunner worked flawlessly. Called my Dad in Michigan. I also have Vonage (for the home phone) and Roadrunner works great for that also. Sounds like the ISP problem is improving or is isolated to certain areas.
If this really catches on I fear that Skype may get drowned with freeloading users (like me ). Can't see how this business model ends up making money unless they're waiting to be be bought out by a big cellular carrier and are trying to boost their subscriber numbers.

I've spent way too much on PDA's over the years:
Palm III, Palm IIIC, Palm V, Sony NR70, Sony NX-80V, Palm Lifedrive, Sony TH-55, Dell X51v
^ Actually I call long distance a lot and I checked out their rates after i was messing around with their free calling. Lets just say they got a new pay subscriber. So their theory worked on my part.

The business model here is twofold.
1. They want to get you hooked. Then, when 1 Jan 07 hits and you have to choose to lose the service or subscribe...
Sure, many people are going to drop the service or at least stop using the PC to Phone portion, but they are betting that enough people will want to continue to use the service and will subscribe.
2. They are trying to pull people away from Vonage (and other similar services that several ISPs are offering). "Why should I pay for Vonage when I can use Skype for free?" These people are more likely to step up and subscribe when the promotion is over.
I think it's great. I was told that Skype from my x51v sounded better then my cell.
I would like to report that Skype has acknowledged the problem and have fixed most of the problem:
Quote:
Hi all! I just want to give you a quick update on our efforts to address the problems some of you have been having with free SkypeOut calls in the US and Canada. Basically, what happened is this: In the first 18 hours after our announcement, the IP addresses of some of our US and Canadian callers were not correctly judged as within US and Canada. We are relying on standard internet traffic information to recognize the geographic location of callers. The system took a few hours to learn the ropes and should now be accurately identifying the IP addresses.
Of course, if you are still experiencing a problem, please report it or post a message here. Our excellent customer support team is actively scanning this forum as well as responding to your direct inquiries at http://support.skype.com/?_a=tickets&_m=submit.
Again, let me apologize for this hiccup. I feel terrible that not everyone was able to enjoy the free calling on the very first day. I'll be monitoring this Forum and checking with customer support frequently. Please let us know if you encounter any further problems. I'd also love to know what you think of our offer, now that hopefully, it is working for everyone.
Thank you all for supporting Skype!
Henry Gomez
General Manager, Skype North America
So those that were experiencing problems, please try to connect a free call. It should go through now. If it does not, please send a "support ticket" to Skype with all your ISP, IP and location info so they can fix the problem for you.
Though they have fixed most of the issues, the issue of refunding me the money they took from my account for calls that were supposed to be "free" have not been addressed yet. Let's just hope they refund people's money in a timely fashion.
Lastly, I have noticed a marked degradation in call quality. The word is out. People are using the service in mass and it IS effecting call quality, at least what I've experienced. Skype has always been CRYSTAL clear for me, morning, noon or night. Now it's choppy, delayed and almost inaudible... let's just hope it's a minor annoyance and will clear up soon. :)

True. I was testing it again today (talking to myself ) and noticed that the incoming sound quality is not as good as before but the outgoing (for the person on the other side of the line) is still pretty good.
