According to EE Times, Intel is looking to put several of its loss-ridden communications-chip businesses on the selling block, including the Xscale unit. According to the article Intel is completely moving out of the embedded chip market.
"Intel's Xscale processor business, including the StrongARM chip for PDAs, BlackBerrys, cell phones, handheld computers and portable media players, is up for sale, it said. That business made approximately $250 million in sales last year, according to the report."
Of course this leads to further speculation about the future of our favorite device, the Axim. Will it be converged or will Dell exit the market completely?

that's just the processor... i am pretty sure that htc will continue to make pda using other processors... however, whether dell wanna continue axim line of pda bidness is another story... everyone is shifting toward smartphones... even htc...
I don’t want or need a umpc or other converged device, I was hoping that dell would release an updated axim, I guess not.
I don't think the company that buys the business unit will be looking to continue the path Intel took; they may just buy it for the IP that comes along with it.
Also, name one other chip company that makes embedded processors on a big scale other than Samsung. I hope someone steps into these shoes fast, but it looks like the days of a device that is not converged and runs on Xscale are numbered.
progress states that a "do-all" device is what the ultimate goal is but can and will it do everything flawlessly and run all day on 1 battery ? the axim came pretty close to this goal so now can we improve on what we know works and what functions users desire
What is happening with the Mobile Market? Chris... maybe this would be something to look into as some background news on one of those slow days.
But in the past year we have seen/heard of Dell looking at closing it's doors to the Mobile Market and not producing any further Axim's. Though I believe the final verdict is still out on this issue, it still makes all of us wonder and others cringe in fear.
Then today we hear the news that Intel is looking at pulling out of the Mobile Market. Why? I look at a number in sales like $250 million and think it's doing well. But someone brought up a good idea.... why doesn't AMD pick up the ball on this one? They're just as good and could accomplish the same thing.
I'm sure there are many other users out there that are like me. They love their PDA (no matter what brand/model they have) I constantly have mine everywhere with me. Whether I'm walking down the street, going to work, or just heading to a party... it's always with me. Without it I know I would be lost.
It just worries me that it keeps sounding like everyone is dropping out of the mobile market..... and I have to ask why? They have grown into a mobile computer you can have in your pocket (at speeds of 533mhz that is good).
I guess what worries me is that my Dell Axim x50v may be my last device, because I'm not seeing a visable upgrade path ahead of me.
(oh, and I don't want a smartphone... my phone get well used and sometimes banged around. My PDA is kept seperate my from phone and I like it that way. With bluetooth I can sync whatever info I need. I'll stick with normal PDA format)

Did they list it on eBay yet? I think I'll buy it.
IMHO, there is a huge future for these processors...Intel is making a mistake letting them go.

Then again, there have been rumors of a Microsoft XBox portable / PDA hybrid to be released in 2008. If Microsoft wants to put out the hardware itself, then Intel's mobile chip line may make for a very good acquistion target.
Also, name one other chip company that makes embedded processors on a big scale other than Samsung. I hope someone steps into these shoes fast, but it looks like the days of a device that is not converged and runs on Xscale are numbered.
Uh... did you forget about Motorola?
