Great program. And let's face it, I looked cool as all get out using a PDA with E-sword at bible study when I used to go.
Would be nice to have the NIV though.
I agree. NIV is so proud of their translation that they feel the need to charge an arm and a leg for it. They should visit the e-sword web site and read the scripture they have there.
Also, one more soapbox statement. Although the software is free the site takes donations if you find the software helpful. Now I'm not sure, but I think people, like us, who can shell out for a cool PDA could afford to help out with software like this, so that people can continue to develop and distribute it.
Actually you can get NIV on Pocket E-sword with some work. Using a program called BeST (Ben's E-sword Tool), you can capture any bible version available from a popular online "bible gateway" site to xml. Then you use BPeST (Ben's Pocket PC E-sword Tool) on your AXIM to convert the XML file to the format used by Pocket E-Sword. It takes a while, but can be done.
I leave up to you the moral and legal issues of capturing bibles freely available online and converting it to your own private use . I've done it with the NIV. I equate it to printing each page from the web so I can read it while off line. I can't share my converted file because that would be like photocopying my private printouts and distributing copies. (Sorry)
(Actually, I'm not sure if the automated web capture of BeST still works. I did it some time ago.)
One of the biggest reasons with the non WM5 version was that on WM5 it wouldn't let you cut and paste the text from the bible window. This is important for taking notes and for running searches in greek, because cutting and pasting is the only way I know of to imput greek into Eswords search function. If they fixed this in the WM5 optimized edition will someone alert me theretoo (cool word huh?) Anyways, the problem was specific only to WM5 so if your running 2003SE or anything other than WM5 dont tell me it works. WM5. Anyone want to shoot Rick an email and ask him what changes he made?
Also it would be ubergroovy if he added something allowing you to sync bookmarks highlights versnotes etc.. between desktop esword and pocket esword.

Thanks for pointing that out. I went to the yahoo groups to get a copy of bpest. I used a similar tool in the past to capture a red letter version of the KJV for the desktop version before it was available on the E-sword site for free.
Concerning the legality and ethics of the matter, there is such a thing as fair use. I know, that line has been blurred thanks to the whole RIAA debacle and MP3s. But a personal copy is surely legitimate.
I agree with this. I did email Rick about this a while ago, but never heard back from him. I'm sure it would take some work.

He's very busy, I've emailed him a few times in the past and it usually takes a few tries before he replies. I think your right that it would be hard because (not that I know anything about programming) it looks like the versenotes are one file instead of a small file for each verse note. So when you sync you would have to either overwright the PC or the PPC because you cant merge the notes if they are only one file. (there goes my attempt at sounding like I know what I'm talking about, i dont) I personaly find the built in RTF (rich text) editor very helpful for taking notes or preparing notes for a Bible study. I just wish I could cut and paste into the search. Overall though it cleans every other Bible reader programs clock. And I've tried a good many.
Little tip for those new to Pocketesword. You hard reset you lose every note, prayer request, highlight, etc. Copy all the files you want to back up out of programfiles/pocketesword to your sd or cf or someother backup location, and do it rather often (weekly is good)
That is what I am using right now due to the Chinese Bible issue I mentioned above. One big problem with OliveTree Bible Reader: it doesn't say which book you are on. This is one major drawback on Bible Reader, however, it starts very quickly.
The version I am useing shows both the Bible version your using and the Book, chapter and verse. I am using Version 3.66 Build 112c dated August 17, 2006.
Kevin1a--I loooked at the "View Update Changes" link on the Pecket e-Sword site and it said about the new version was "Fixed the copy and paste functionality for Windows Mobile 2005."
i installed e-sword on my x50v+2003SE long time ago and then uninstalled it, but i forgot why. now i remember. after seeing this post, i installed it again. well, it take 1.5m of ram, but can't wrap the word in the simplified chinese version. what's even worse, it wouldn't let me uninstall. luckily i have a SPB back up file. i hope it work well with other versions of bible.

Thanks cglaus, your a pal. Now of to study my Bible for a few hours:approve: .

You know what, since I am using Magic button, I have to tap and hold the icon in order to see the book, chapter and verse. Thanks for the tip!
In the previous version of eSword, the 'Definition' lookup function did not work in WM5. This along with the 'Copy' function are the fixes/enhances to this new version.
FWIW, it also seems to run a little faster on my x51v.
With these fixes, eSword has become a very complete Bible study package for the WM5 platform. With the ability to convert other content on the web for Pocket eSword, there's not much you can't do with it. (The only thing I had to pay for was the NASB, which is the version I use most often.)
