The eSword website says that it "should" be installed to main memory. Though many applications that say that work fine from a storage card.
Usually there is always a DLL file or two dropped into the Windows directory no matter where you install it. IIRC, the DLL's on this are fairly large. Has anyone tried installing to a storage card? How large are the files it places into main memory?
I am just running out of space to place anything else into main memory!
The install actual adds two parts to make the program work, SQL CE and the actual Pocket E-Sword program. When prompted, I installed The SQL CE to device and the main program to SD Card. Works fine like that. I think the SQL CE needs to be in device memory, though I have not tried both from memory card.
Remember, even if you install both to device memory, you can save the resource files (Bibles, commentaries, dictionaries, etc) to your memory card.
The new version for WM05 is great, it corrects the issue on WM05 of popup menu functionality being disabled. Now it is the best bible software available for pocket PC, I have tried them all. The content available pushes them over the edge.

Um...Olive Tree Bible Reader always says what book you are on.
I have Esword, Olive Tree, Laridian, and Mobibook. As a Catholic, I use Olive Tree the most because they offer three Catholic Versions (NAB, NRSV, DR) as opposed to Laridian (NRSV) and Esword (DR). All four have things I really like. I love how easy it is to change books in Esword. I also like the layout a little better than Olive Tree and Laridian. I like Olive Tree better overall though.

I have everything stored on a 256 CF using an Axim 5. I have not had any problems with other than be slow, but that's my Axim and not the program.
They will be available for download in 30 mins. after this posting. (The estimate actually says on my SmartFTP time remaining for upload completion is 15 mins. But I'll just lean on the safe side and double it.)
BTW, after installation of these files make sure to switch your region/language back to USA. And the default for the Chinese writing and Chinese Search Inputs are in Simplified mode...so you'll have to go and change the inputs setting to Traditional (second option which is the one of the right side if I remember correctly) for each of the 2 methods of text entry.
Thanks for pointing that out. I went to the yahoo groups to get a copy of bpest. I used a similar tool in the past to capture a red letter version of the KJV for the desktop version before it was available on the E-sword site for free.
Concerning the legality and ethics of the matter, there is such a thing as fair use. I know, that line has been blurred thanks to the whole RIAA debacle and MP3s. But a personal copy is surely legitimate.
Good looking out.
My thought on that is: I own a published NIV, two NLT's, and I bought a software version of NIV for the Palm from Laridian. Laridian would not allow me to move the license from Palm to PPC without some fee (I think it was a measilyi 5% discount). IMO, they have received my money. But the lack of NIV support on E-sword forced me to start reading the NASB turns out to be my preference now over NIV and NLT. And now I have a published (book form) of NASB I read daily. The only other translation that interests me now is ESV which is a free download for E-sword.
ok...i probably will get flamed for sayign this, but i'm starting to boycott the NIV, specifically zondervan
i'm not sure some of you remember the days when biblegateway went through an upgrade, and they got into an issue with zondervan not allowing them to display the NIV online. there was a period for about half a year that biblegateway did not have the NIV translation. it was only after some cajoling that they finally caved in...
because of that, i've switched to the ESV, which i find an excellent translation. plus they provide it for free :)
I couldn't agree more. I find the NIV lacking in many, many ways. Plus the method of translation leaves much to be desired in many areas. But since most of the people I come across seem to be ardent NIV proponents, in order for me to relate, I sometimes have to have the NIV. But I do find the greed behind the NIV publishers to be suspect. Maybe it a plot to give the impression that it's the best. You know, "anything worth having is worth paying for" type thing. I don't know. Just foolin'.
Personally, I use the KJV primarily. NASB and RSV also. Oh and the vulgate for kicks and giggles.

Not to beat a dead horse, but there is a way to relocate SQL CE 2.0 to a storage card. It's not simple or quick, but it's possible. I successfully got it to work. (Yes, I know it worked anyway on WM5, except for copy/paste; but I didn't like having the SQL CE 2.0 files in main memory or in a "Windows" folder on my storage card.)
Here's a paste from the article, edited for relevance.
First, you'll need a registry editor (such as PHM or TRE) and a COM DLL register utility like this one.
Moving SQL CE 2.0 to Storage
The SQL CE 2.0 engine is generally installed in the device's \Windows\SQLCE 2.0 directory. Start by unregistering the ssceca20.dll and ssce20.dll files (SQL CE 2.0 will not work now). Now, move this directory to the storage card's own Windows directory (or other directory of your choosing, like Program Files). You now should have a new directory:
Code:
\CF Card\Windows\SQLCE 2.0
Now, go back and register the ssceca20.dll and ssce20.dll files. SQL CE 2.0 is now fully operational again. There are a few more bits to attend to.
Open the registry editor and look for the following key:
How wonderful! I take the Bible with me! Get a New Jerusalem version and I have it ALL. YipEE!!!! By the way, who CARES!!!????? You have SCRIPTURES in MOBILE! Sing praises and quit griping!!
Dunno if this will work with Axim but in O2 Himalaya i've manage to install the older version of P e-Sword in SD Card by first running the install files & copying the generated .cab files at desktop \Program Files to PPC.
Then create a \Windows dir in SD Card, install the e-Sword & then the MS SQLCE .cab files in SD Card. You may ned to point to the dir locations of bible & devotional files in SD after 1st running the prog.
Thanks for all the feedback and definitely to Rick Myers for a great program. I use e-Sword on my desktop solely -- what a great program.
I have read with interest all of your feedback about Pocket e-Sword and the rave reviews. I am amazed that not a single person has listed the slow search capabilities. In fact, it makes me wonder if anyone else is experiencing this? Pocket e-Sword is SO slow at searching that I have to run Olivetree just for searches. What takes seconds on Olivetree would take ... I'm afraid to guess on e-Sword. If the search capabilities would be fixed on e-Sword, there would be no competition IMHO.
Certainly i haven't noticed a problem with the searching, although it's not something i use an huge ammount.
Care to give an example search and we can do some comparisons in time?
