Very nice. Would also be interesting to see what controls they are placing 9trying to place) on devices / wireless ...
The article said it improved test scores. I also wonder what controls they put on to keep students from beaming the answers to each other!

Unfortunately there are school districts in many areas that have almost an unlimited supply of money because of the varying methods that fund public education. Some areas of our state have very wealthy communities while other areas have very poor communities. I think if the local community doesn't have a problem with the school spending $450 for an axim for each student then they shouldn't have a problem with how much they pay in taxes to fund the school.
I'm glad to see that their are not given latops to the kids. I think that the PDA is bette and easier.

It is a good opportunity for children to gain hands-on technology experience. I am growing sick and tired of adults that are scared to learn the true capabilities of their cell phone and of people graduating high school who still have no idea how to use a computer or even how to do a simple internet search. Technology like this in the classroom will make sure that students graduate with skills the workplace is asking for. Plus, just the act of learning how to put game software on the Axim and other fun items will teach them alot. It's a heck of a kot of work to load an Axim (somoething most of us on Aximsite take for granted).
Also, I'm not sure the students actually *use* the Axim for the tests. I believe the use of the handhelds during the teaching process is what increased the test scores. That stands to reason. The handhelds more than likely piqued the student's interests while enabling the teacher more options for homework then the same old boring routine of go home, read this, answer these questions.
One other thing, in addition to the academics, the children are learning a lot of reponsibility. Axims are expensive items and I'm sure they have to be replaced by themselves or their parents if lost or stolen. What a great way for children to learn responsilibty - somthing our country is severely lacking.

This is pretty intersting, 300 Axims with accessories. Next year they are going to 1,000 Axims. I hope Dell is up to it. This should let them know that no longer developing the Axim is a very poor idea indeed.
My x51v can almost do everything my dead laptops could do, but not quite.
Very capapble indeed, and will do almost eveyrthing I need. When I need to do something more, I use my computer.
Those students will be learning alot, and learning about wifi and bt at that early age, should have them pretty well prepared for the furture with how our society is becoming more and more portable.

I second that. The technology challenged adults out there are getting to me too. I'm the computer guy for like 400 people and there are some psycologist where I work too with PhD's and are super smart. But in front of a computer they turn into infants and I must hold their hands thru every little thing. Okay, I better stop now.
I think putting PDAs in the hands of teenage students is a great idea. I wonder how they have them "locked down"?

There is also a potential to set them in somewhat of a kiosk mode. I have seen it done before. Coca-Cola did this. There were ways around it if you knew how, but that was also in earlier versions of their software. It is now a separate application and you are able to use the other built-in functions. I don't think the employees can add additional software. I would assume that it has it's own connector.
But none the less, I'm sure there are software packages out there that would enable the school to lock down the devices to some extent. They should be allowed to since they paid for them.
Also, I doubt their tests are done on the Axim, unless they're using some additional "test player" software. Desktop versions are out there (I used them in college) so I'm sure there is a PPC version.
I'm sure this makes things easier for the teacher. My mother is a teacher and she brings tons of papers home to check. Now, the teacher can print them out if he wants to; but he wouldn't necessarily have to. He could just beam them right back.
Students are able to download information from each other by putting the devices in short range of one
another. That’s why many of them have the same picture of a monkey on their device’s desktop.
“I found this picture of the monkey, and then I beamed it to everyone in the class (just like my Uncle Frenchy told me to),” student Paige Croxton said.
I have a feeling Aximsite will be getting 300 new members soon.

I'm studying for My Master of Education and I recently wrote this assignment on this topic.
I have been using my Axims for the last three years and I am looking forward to the day when management realises the potential of PDAs. The fact that the Axim can use all the pocket MS Office apps is a huge advantage - but more work needs to be done on templates for Access to make it more appealing. I'm also interested to see if more will happen with Onenote because I think it has the potential to be great for everyone who uses PDAs if it can move past it's current limitations
I have attached the assignment for anyone interested.

PS it was a rush job assignment - editing could have done with some more work
I think your paper's very good, well written. And totally agree on OneNote's potential - think it's the most exciting new mobile app around ...

I hope someone should teach them how to make a full backup on the SD card, otherwise when they come home, the WSOD will appear and then a hard reset and then crying the whole afternoon. Just kidding.
I think it's great that more Axims are used at schools nowadays, sometimes the problem is that the teacher will not understand the technology and probably will prohibit students to carry their Axims, thinking that they are cheating. I use to have a Scientific calculator with Basic and the Engineer who was my teacher never let me use it because he fear of everything he did not know. :hide:
