After 18 months of public beta testing, the official StyleTap 1.0 has just been released.
"StyleTap Platform allows you to run applications (and games!) originally written for Palm OS handhelds on your Windows Mobile Pocket PC. With more than 20,000 applications for the Palm OS platform available – many of them free – you will be able to do so much more with your Windows Mobile device."
I suppose there might be an application or two that I use to use, and would like to again, but in general, if I wanted to run palm apps, I would have bought a palm device again.
I know, I'll just dig out my old Handspring Platinum Visor and just use that.
Nice idea, but I would think a very limited market, very limited.
StyleTap, in theory, is all well and good. But put into practice it has a few shortcomings--at least for me. On my Treo 650, I run CardTxt all the time. I write a lot in my spare time and CardTxt handles very large files--up to 4 MB if I'm not mistaken, so it's easy for me to set up a Targus keyboard and work on my Palm. I thought it would be nice using StyleTap to run CardTxt on my Axim, since it has a bigger screen than my Palm PDA, AND because Pocket Word can't handle my large-ass word processing files. All too late, I thought about checking the compatibility list of Palm OS programs that work on StyleTap. Naturally, CardTxt isn't on it. It never opens any files for me on my Axim. As a result, StyleTap is kind of useless for me. My Palm PDA is my phone, so it's with me all the time, as is my Axim. In my case, it wouldn't make sense for me to try and run Palm OS programs on my Pocket PC. Even though my Pocket PC is always with me, so is my Treo. It's just a matter of practicality.
I also tried to run LJP on my Dell Axim, again because of the perks of a bigger screen. LOL. That opened up a whole new can of worms. After a long day at work, I don't feel like trying to wrap my mind around the process of HotSyncing files through ActiveSync to make .prc files execute on a Pocket PC; there's got to be an easier way. At that point I just reach for my Zodiac or something. Or decide to play with my dog.
Is this basically a Palm emulator? Or something else? I may be tempted to get it if programs such as LJP function well on it ;). All-in-one emulator that works on X51? That's gotta be worth it! But it seems too good to be true.
hold up, does this mean I can use the palm calendar I used w/ my zire 71?
1. Last I checked it DOESN'T use Palm OS 5, it's like their own modded version of Palm OS 4...
2. It's doesn't have the built in apps like the palm os does. So if you can find it prc file, it should be able to run it.
3. The only thing I personally really miss from the calendar was the purge button. Now whenever I do a hard reset and do a restore I get 100 notification popups.
I used it for a little while for a couple of apps that weren't available on windows. I can't remember why I quit using it, but $49 is way more than I'd be willing to pay to run an app that probably only cost $10.
only reason I want my palm calander back is i seem to lose shit on the x51v's calander when i sync to two different desktops... i gave up on doing that and it's been fine, but the palm never lost a date that i noticed doing the same thing... overall the x51v is a ton more useful though, so screw it!
I tried it back before itn went 1.0. Summed up it is simply palm OS without the built in apps, and with some quirks. Very useful, however it is definitly not worth $50. I would be willing to pay $10. Styletap should get some feedback on price, because its way high!
I purchased the preview version a while back so I could use a biblical greek flashcard program that was only available for PalmOS. I think I only paid 29.99 for it though, and I might have even received a discount off that.
49.99 does seem a little high for the program. I haven't tried the full 1.0 version yet, I've downloaded it today and will see if it has any improvements over the "preview" version I purchased. I believe the upgrade if free for me, so I won't complain :)
