3dtracking is offering a great FREE online GPS tracking service. I've seen some other websites like this, but none of them were totally free like 3dtracking. You can either track online or download the recorded .kmz to view on Google Earth.
3dtracking makes use of GPS and an active Internet connection to provide the most accurate and real-time tracking service available:
the GPS receiver gathers location and speed data
an active Internet connection sends the data to 3dtracking
once the data has been received by 3dtracking, users can log in (website) and view the tracking unit's location, speed and history
It kinda sounds cool, but how do you have an Internet connection when you're out getting tracked? (Sure, coverged devices with built-in GPS and always on cellular Internet, but that's not the norm yet).

*sigh*
yea...i can't afford internet connection on the road yet :(
i have gps, but would love to have a live internet connection whereever i go
Checking the website they say that if you don't have an always live internet connection such GPRS, it will update the servers with the route you took when you synchronize with ActiveSync, the other problem in the case of the Axim might be the battery, probably you will have to have turned on the Ax the whole time to register your route, you need a good battery or a car charger if you are in a car of course.
Well battery is always an issue. Most people who use in car GPS navigation usually end up getting a good powered mount.
To make good use of this service, I don't think you have to be connected to the internet all the time. Lets say for example you and your friend are meeting up somewhere. You can turn your GPS tracking on and your friend can pinpoint your location right from his/her home and then meet up with you. Constant internet connection is only needed when you want to map your whole route.

I've installed the software on my Axim X51V, opened an account on http://free.3dtracking.net, turned on my GPS, seems like it's sending data to 3dTracking servers, through my WiFi-connection, but I can't get a position on any map at all. Just a error message:
"No data.
Please input different criterion"
Have anyone succeeded in getting their position on a map at free.3dtracking?
Think I'll stick with TrackMe for a while longer! It actually works!

That's the position of my living room window.....
ok, here is my setup (well, the gps/bt part is in the mail but should be here by the end of the week)
- wm2003se on a siemens sx66 pda/phone (has bt) also can use the cradle and active sync if needed for the connection from/to the laptop for the internet access
- ibm t42 w/ bt dongle coming in w/ cingular edge unlimited data plan via pc card modem (great service by the way :) )
- holux 236 bt gps unit w/ iGuidance 3
- i will pick up gpsgate if needed
so how would one set this up take advantage of this cool service? or is there a pc app i could use and bypass the pda and just use the laptop?
