Has anyone seen a SD flash for this version of WM5? If not I know there is a thread somewhere about dumping the memory to a file, I have the original WM5 cd's but it is quicker and easier to do an SD flash update than to attach my X50v to my computer which i have not done in a long time. Thanks if someone is willing to work on it.

As someone who is currently looking to buy either a x50v or x51v this confuses the situation a little bit. I had decided to get the x51v, even at the extra cost, due to the fact that the x50v would be less future proof without the ability to use WM5 properly. Now with this update both machines can use WM5 and basically both are pretty much the same other then the 128MB vs 256MB ROM (well its not ROM.. but you know what I mean). So the question is how important is that extra memory. I mean its just slow memory to install programs to anyway isn't it? Can't an SD card do the same kind of tasks at similar speeds?

It is my understanding that the X51* has a different type of memory than the X50*, not only more memory. And this is in fact one reason why WM5 runs better on the X51*.
Unless you specifically want a WM2003SE device (which the X51* is not capable of being), get the X51*.

Oh, I thought the whole problem with WM5 on the x50 was simply down to the way the x50 addresses its ROM memory. Not that the memory is actually different. I thought the new update fixed this so that WM5 can run the same on the x50 as it can on the x51. If the memory is actually different then can someone confirm this and also confirm that the x50v runs WM5 slower then the x51v even with the update?
How fast is this 'ROM' in each device (why do DELL call it ROM anyway when its clearly used for random accesses, hence RAM..)

I believe that the X50* has NOR memory and the X51* has NAND memory.

Ah right, just checked up on that. They seem to be two varying kinds of flash memory, NAND is faster at erasing and writing new data and has a longer re-write expectancy, while NOR is faster at reading data. So while NAND is a bit slow for reads it would certainly be better as random access memory.
My final question is, wouldn't any decent SD or Compact Flash card be just as good as NAND (they probably use NAND technology..)? In which case couldn't a x50v use a flash card to store most programs in WM5 rather then the 128MB NOR memory? Or does WM5 not allow that?

Have anybody seen if the VGA out issue in WM5 A02 ROM have been solved?? This is a very important point for me, because i use the X50v with one TFT external monitor and would be a big problem if that feature is disabled, because i'd like to install the WM5 upgrade and the new A02 ROM.

Oh my God - I can't believe they actually released an update. My wife now is the proud owner of my X50v and I switched to an HTC 6700 Windows Mobile Phone. Since then, I have wantingly stared at my old Dell but have been able to console myself with how miserably Dell handled the whole WM5 update. Now I think it's time to buy the wife a cheap Palm and take back the Axim. LOL!

I have a home made vga out cable and it doesn't look like they fixed it
However, there's a chance that something in my cable has disconnected due to my sketchy soldering workmanship.
Performance is much smoother though. Just the initial screen calibration after a hard reset, everything actually appears smoothly.
