I bet this type of "inspiration" happens all the time--intentionally or not. No one would look at that monitor and say "hey, that would be a good look for a PDA", but when a designer/engineer sits in front of piece of equipment all day things have got to seep into one's subconscious...
This reminds me of this piece of electronic lab equipment i use that i am CONVINCED was ripped off by Apple. Instead of using knobs or a keypad to change values and navigate menus like most equipment, this thing uses a big white dial that you spin around with your thumb or a single finger. Further more, the device makes a satisfying little electronic "click" for each degree you scroll. Sound familiar? Oh, and the device in question is a signal generator--something that would be used heavily by someone designing, say, an MP3 player...
Interesting thought. The fact that it is a device that would be used by someone working with audio devices is too significant to ignore. I wonder, though, which device inspired which. I'd say it's almost a given, depending on the release dates. When was that piece of equipment released (or first manufactured)? The first Click Wheel iPod was released January 2004, and the design for the Click Wheel had to be at least in a concept form long before that.
Just realized something else. Does the dial physically rotate or is it a touch sensitive dial? The first iPods were released in October 2001, and they had rotating dials. The models released July 2002 had touch sensitive dials. Still would like to know what piece of equipment that is.
