X50/X51 Design Inspiration - HP Monitor?

I was looking at my old HP monitor (mx70) and noticed the design similarities. Look at the button positions, color and design. What do you think?

Did you guys notice the little indent below the middle action button on the monitor and the X50/X50v? Hard to believe it is purely coincidental.

Cute. I would say the similarity is striking. How old is the old monitor? What is that, a 14" screen? It's almost round!

I got mine in 2002. Not sure about the actual release date of the monitor though.

Okay, I have to admit the resemblance is uncanny. If it was a Dell monitor, I'd have to absolutely say that it was an intentional design... but it's HP.

Just curious, that thing on the very top of the monitor, that's not the power button is it?

The button on top is just the hp logo. The middle button below is the power button.

They look so much alike that it is easy to say that one is an inspiration for another. However, in the end I am pretty positive that it was just a coincidence and not intentional. Then again, ya never know.

You didn't read the fine print on the Terms of Use for your X51, did you?

They look alike, but were made by 2 different companies. I think it was coincidental. After all, all pdas have similar interfaces.

If you tell me the monitor has a touch screen, I'd be convinced.

I don't mind change as long as I'm not around when it happens.

I bet this type of "inspiration" happens all the time--intentionally or not. No one would look at that monitor and say "hey, that would be a good look for a PDA", but when a designer/engineer sits in front of piece of equipment all day things have got to seep into one's subconscious...

This reminds me of this piece of electronic lab equipment i use that i am CONVINCED was ripped off by Apple. Instead of using knobs or a keypad to change values and navigate menus like most equipment, this thing uses a big white dial that you spin around with your thumb or a single finger. Further more, the device makes a satisfying little electronic "click" for each degree you scroll. Sound familiar? Oh, and the device in question is a signal generator--something that would be used heavily by someone designing, say, an MP3 player...
