Is this the holy grail of gadgets?
Part cellphone, part iPod, part computer, Apple unveils revolutionary device
KEITH MCARTHUR
From Wednesday's Globe and Mail
After changing the way we listen to music with the iPod, Apple now wants to revolutionize the way the world communicates.
Apple Computer Inc. chief executive officer Steve Jobs yesterday unveiled the iPhone, a handheld device that's part phone, part iPod and part wireless computer.
"Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything," Mr. Jobs said yesterday at the annual Macworld Conference and Expo. "It's very fortunate if you can work on just one of these in your career. . . . Apple's been fortunate that it's introduced a few of those."
If Mr. Jobs is right, the phone of the future will be one that plays music, surfs... More

Looks interesting. They say it runs Max osx. I wonder if that's a full version or a pocket pc type version? If it's that powerful, I wonder how many apps it can run?
It looks pretty cool but I didn't just "grow" a need for it by looking at it. I'll be a hard-sell when it comes to replacing my phone and Ax with something like that.
Another iPhone thread... These things are all over the internet. It's really driving me quite insane. You would think it was the coming of Jesus or something.

Yeah, but were those threads started by Andre, our elite member?! I don't think so!
Seriously, unless it can run 3rd party apps (Playstation Emulators, etc) and a $499-$599 price tag--again, I'll pass.

No, just Steve Jobs 3.0 The iPhone is insanely great. :approve:
what ruins it for me is the inability to write apps for it. i've read on a number of sites (engadget, tuaw etc) that, like the ipod, there will be no API or SDK so there will be no third party developer community and therefore no way of extending the functionality.
Many users of the iPod will not be bothered by the inability to extend the iPod functionality. Many people will see what looks like a nice bit of kit and will use it for the phone, diary and iPod functionality.
It's not revolutionary. The feature set would be nice at around $200. People are gaga over it because Apple has a cool mystique. It'll sell great for a while, then people will realize that it doesn't actually suit their needs. Personally, I think touch screen dial pads are horrible. I need a tactile response when dialing a phone or typing on a keyboard. I'll keep my axim, my phone, my bluetooth gps, my MP3 player (Neuros, not iPod), and go happily on my way.

1) Axim X50. Does 75% of what my gadget needs are.
2) Motorola Cell Phone. 10%
3) Canon Power-Shot Pro 8Mpix digital camera. 15%
These converged devices are trying to replace those three. I simply can't see how they could be combined without breaking down the functionality of them in some way. This iPhone is very cool looking - but it could replace only #2 - so I'd still have 3 gadgets to carry around. Conclusion? It's useless. (To me that is).
My Cingular 8525 covers the Axim part and Cellphone part.
The built in camera covers the simple pics that a cheap camera can do, but nothing replaces a REAL camera (or camcorder for matter)
iPhone is a video player and phone... big deal and it isn't even 3g
