Doug Goldring reviews the Socket Communication WiFi Companion Software. Wi-Fi Companion provides users with a friendly, easy-to-use interface to manage WLAN connectivity. The main page icons provide single tap access to browse the web or check email, find WLANs in range, install security certificates, view IP addresses or modify profiles.
The built-in WLAN Manager is difficult to use, particularly when things do not work as planned. Wi-Fi Companion operates in an intuitive manner, placing the controls in the place where most users would expect them. Sometimes, various options are available from multiple locations, representing the fact that different people will access information from different places or in a variety of ways. Additionally, unlike Dell’s built-in WLAN Utility, all of the information in Wi-Fi Companion is displayed graphically whenever possible, making it easy to use and troubleshoot your network connection…even for people who are not familiar with wireless networking.

Thanks, Andre. I have to say, after reviewing this program, if you use WiFi, then you must use WiFi Companion. It just fills so many useful functions that are completely ignored by the native software.

Great writeup, Doug! Just as an FYI, thefiredude and a few other discovered that there is an is an issue with the A12 ROM on the X51v and Socket WiFi, namely how the WLAN is reporting signal strength. Socket Communications is aware of the issue and working on a fix that should be available soon.

I have been using WiFi Companion for over a year. It is an outstanding alternative to the connectivity package shipped with the Axim. I highly recommend it as worth every penny if you find yourself on the road and searching for hot spots.

Thanks for that note, Breley. That is a good point to make. Since I only use WM 2003SE, I was not aware of thi concern.

I've been having never-ending problems with connecting to my router with my x51v. Sometimes it connects, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it connects and then, five minutes later, with no settings changed, it doesn't. It seems particularly picky about connecting at the same time as my laptop. But sometimes it works!
...Any chance that this program will help, do you think? Pity the trial period is only 3 days. Even 7 days would give me a much better chance to figure out the answer myself.
peejay, that sounds like it may be a problem with your router or the signal. This program may help you identify where you are hving problems with the ping and trace utilities. But it sounds like your problems may be beyond teh scope of what this program is able or intended to do.

After using WiFi Companion for a few days I have to say it is a very cool product. Unfortunately I won't be buying it or keeping it on my Axim. I can't stand how it constantly displays a notification prompt in the soft keys. It kind of sucks that such an obviously great product is hampered by something so simple.
Thanks Doug Goldring
This is one I really want to check out:approve:
I just got a toshiba lattop and love it's wifi helper and was wondering it the Axim couldn't be made easyer to usand here it is
I have had problems connecting to my home network when I have encryption enabled (wep or wpa). I can connect when I turn security off, but this is no solution. Would this application allow me to connecto with security enabled? BTW I have an axim x50v wm2003se.

I don't mind change as long as I'm not around when it happens.

Bam Bam, I just got a Toshiba laptop as well. That WiFi helper program is fantastic. I love it.
Morphy, I don't know that WiFi Companion will help you connect per se, however, it may help you identify where the problem is. It sounds like you may have configured something wrong when you set up the WEP key.
This happened when I set up my parents' network. It turned out the problem was that I had created the profile wrong on their laptop. Try deleting the profile from your Axim, turn on the WEP key and then creating a new profile on your Axim and see if that helps.
