I spoke to a Dell rep at Microsoft's New Day launch event for Vista/Office/Exchange, and she confirmation that Dell believes that the future lies in converged devices, and that Dell does not want to compete in the mobile phone market.

She actually said that the X51 is the last Axim PDA from Dell.

I HATE the idea of having to accept a weaker, less capable PDA just to incorporate a phone! I want to be able to replace my phone without being forced to change my PDA.

This is very dissapointing Dell, VERY dissapointing.

This is sad news to me, if true. I'm not surprised though. I'm with the earlier poster, would love to help deplete their inventory with one of the cheap x51v sales.

If they do have one of those sales, I'll definitely use my prefered account and pick up a couple to keep "onhand" when the other craps out.

I wonder if they plan on making any UMPCs. It almost sounds like Sony when they announced they were leaving the Handheld market altogether and concentrating on other mobile mediums.

I guess it's a good time as any to pickup a spare extended battery.

I'm new to handhelds and I've never had a smart phone before. Why do you think that the new products will be less capable then the Axim? And I wonder why don't they just build a phone into the Axim. Technology changes so fast, you't think that it's just a matter of time. The problem I have still is that it seems that you can't have a GSRP phone AND wi-fi. At least not in a PDA.

Those that have just recently bought their units shouldn't worry too much. They are still going to have to support them even thought they may not be selling them any more. I really become a legal issue because you bought a product with an expressed warranty. They will either have to honor they warranties or compensate the end user monetarily. It would look really bad for Dell if they just told everyone you are SOL. Especially since a good majority of the Axim user either own a Dell computer for personal or business purposes. Most people at least know someone with a Dell computer.

The Orange SPV M5000 (or the HTC Universal as most people know it) is quite a decent high-end PDA/phone. It has the VGA screen and a 520Mhz processor. Its only major limiting factor is its poor memory capacity.

No more use for Axims?

Looks like the best choice now is to trade Axims for iPhones :rolling:

Here is another peice of data in the mix:

If you go to the Dell site

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/c...n&s=dhs&~ck=mn

There are two Axim offerings X51 and the X51v. Then you click on that 'specially configured axim' box on the upper right hand corner . . . all the specially configured axims are now x51v.

Hmmm. I seem to remember there used to be more x51 offerings. Now its only the x51 520 . . . and the x51v. That's it.

Remember who we are dealing with here. Just because Dell might be discontinuing the 'x51' soon (which wouldn't surprise me) does it necessarily follow that they are discontinuing the 'x51v' 624mhz anytime soon?

My answer: anybody's guess. I wouldn't be surprised if Dell management didn't know what they were going to do (or what they are doing).

Scenerio 1--the Axim x51v will become the new low end. No more x51. A new product replaces the x51v in the topslot.

Scenerio 2--the Axim x51v will drag on for another year or so and it will be like that old twilight zone . . . x51 what was that? (only x51v left) and then one day the x51v page will disappear altogether . . .

Yup.....noting I can do to stop Dell from bailing out....but what I can do is pick up a spare one for cheap!! :)

I'll take another one, or two, mabye more to help Smell out of their situation. I enjoy my X51v so much, I'd buy another one at their "Going Out Of Business Sale."
