This time, it's a rumor about Dell doing a phone. Well, not really a rumor, more like speculation.
An article in the EEtimes talked about all the moves Dell has made in the past month. Dell hiring a Motorola Exec gets me someone optimistic too!
"PC maker Dell seems to be on a hiring spree of senior executives from related industries. Over the past few days, it has recruited Ron Garriques, head of Motorola's handsets group, to run a newly formed unit within Dell focusing on consumer products, as well as naming former Solectron CEO Michael Cannon to head its manufacturing operations"
Since I run Aximsite.com, a Dell Handheld enthusiast site, I have been close with Dell over the past few years and I have heard all the rumors. Some pan out, but most do not. There is still the ongoing Tablet rumor, a rumor that I believe still. There is a rumor that Dell is not done with the Axim, one that I DO NOT believe. The phone rumor has been out there for as long as the Dell Axim X5. (Nov 2002) We are still waiting on the Dell Axim X71. Remember that name?
If Dell does get into the game with a phone, what must they do to be competitive? Can they just rebrand an HTC Device? Do they need a Smartphone or Pocket PC Phone? What will it take for Dell to jump in to the game running? HP already has a serious jump on them in the game with 4 different phones under their belt in the past 2 years.

I, personally, would welcome an Axim-based phone. Being an ex-Treo user, I really miss the days of carrying just one device. The integration between the phone and the operating system would have to be perfect though; being able to initiate a call by tapping on a Contact List entry is one feature that I miss almost daily.
As stated by AKAJohnDoe above, I would want this phone to keep the Axim’s VGA screen, Bluetooth, WiFi and expansion slots. With Apple’s announcement of it’s upcoming iPhone, I would be surprised and quite disappointed if Dell didn’t have an Axim-based phone in the works.
I think HTC Universal (Imate Jasjar) was close to X51v specs but with a phone (don't flame for saying that). Looks and convenience is a different story.
Personally, I like what AKAJohnDoe had to say except:
I would like two models - one with a phone and one without. I don't care much for the phone PDA combo. I can see how this combo would benefit many, but I just prefer them to be separate.
Based on demise of Axim thread I think the later option is out (much to chargrin of many of us). As for the former, for Dell to get in to the game they are going to have to put up with a lot of BS from at least one cell carrier. Considering how bad the options are for phone customers I can't imagine being a supplier [of phones] to any of them! If I were in Dell's shoes, I'd punt on any combo PPC phone device.
