Of course, even though it makes sense, it is no less of a disappointment. I've always thought that the merging of the phone with the PDA (and the mini-laptop it had evolved into) to be a compromise I wasn't willing to make. I never want to be tied to a particular cell network because of the PDA I use; if I want to quit the contract, I have to buy another device? Yuck! I'd rather wear 2 devices to divorce those 2 conflicting interests from one another.
Well said FrinkTL, I agree 100%.
All we can hope for now is that someone at Palm sees the "open market hole" created by the death of stand alone PPC's and makes a next generation Palm that matches specs/features of the last round of PPC's [with swappable battery for pete's sake]. Can't say I was ever a fan of Palms (once PPC's took over), but I'd buy a stand alone Palm that emulates last round of PPC's vice a converged device for many years to come.
This really sucks. I have a PPC 6700 from Sprint running WM5 and I like my X50v running wm2003se so much better. Not because of the operating systems, but a phone should be a phone first, not a Swiss army knife of communications. I like the way my X50v works so much better at pda stuff too. I hope my Axim doesn't break anytime soon.

I dunno..ive kinda felt like they have been abandoned for some time already support wise. Its a shame there wasnt more of a "market" for PDA's, frankly I hate all in 1 devices mainly because it always represents a compromise. Lately ive been discouraged enough that I have been leaving my axims cradled. I started with the casio and have stuck with the Axim's from the x5. Now I just carry my blackberry and what I cant do on there, I just dont bother doing. Yes I know I can add functionality even to the blackberry but with the tiny screen its just not worth the hassle.
Yes, maybe we could just become a ppc site, but please dont go away aximsite! This site is the best, and just b/c dell wants to disc the axim doesnt mean we have to disc aximsite.
I registered simply to reply to this news. This is very irritating to hear.
Perhaps I'm ignorant of the market and options out there and I'd hope you could enlighten me. But If I want a phone...I'll by a phone. If I want a PDA I'll buy a PDA. If I want a Tablet PC...I'd get one of those.
I've thought about getting a "PPC phone" but I don't like the idea of being stuck with a single carrier contract, being charged for data, or owning a inferior product. Perhaps techonology is at a place where I can buy a device that I like and outfit it with a carrier of my choosing...maybe not. Let me know...and I won't be so upset then.
But what other device out there can do what I currently use my x51v for.
-Set in a cradle at my desk
-Listen to Tunes, videos, and audio books
-Download or stream those tunes, videos, and audio books to my device directly
-connect to my bluetooth GPS and use on trips
-connect to my wireless network at home and other places (WIFI)
-run power point slides off to a projector. (VGA)
-Compose emails, tasks, calendar entries, without a stupid little keyboard or number pad
-Hold my personal information (bank acount registers-(pocket quicken) contacts, ect.)
-Download weather information at anytime
-Use as a alarm clock on trips
-Use as a data storage/transfer device
-I happen to use a Pocket Bible program
-I'm also a pilot so I have several piloting programs installed
What other device can do all this stuff, and still fit in my pocket. Or do it as well, without (many) flaws. And do it all knowing I have a well established name to "depend" on given something goes wrong. The x51v is exactly the tool I need.
I just hope my axim lasts until the cellphone/PPC market, gets to a place where there is product that can do all the above, without the annoyance of excessive Carrier fees and contracts.

I'm done with my rant.
HP still has PDA's that can do all that you currently do with your Axim. The catch is you will have to pay more and not have a VGA screen. Otherwise, it is pretty much a wash.

What is the deal with HP and VGA? It's like they are afraid to make a new device with it. I owned the 4700 for awhile and apart from the bizarre touchpad (why touch a pad below a screen that you can touch already? Never made sense to me), it was a nice device and the screen was beautiful (I dare say even more vibrant than the Axim). But now they've cancelled it and seem content to keep pushing out more and more QVGA models (some of which are strange to me). Are there any other companies easily purchased in the US that have VGA models? My personal dream device would be a 4150 iPAQ with a VGA screen and WM6 (and plenty of internal storage of course).
Each to their own of course, but for me THIS is the one to drool over....

A good friend of mine at a "laptop university" where Dell's are used told me that Dell told him that they were going to be offering a Tablet PC soon. Very soon. But I was told to keep it under wraps. So, don't go telling the whole world just yet!
:)
Yes, Dell is supposed to be releasing a convertible tablet in the latitude line at the end of the year - as far as I know it's not under NDA or anything, but there hasn't been much publicity yet. (though as much as I've said is already public ;))
But in this case, the Axim will no longer produce no more Axim?
