I think a modular type of system would work best. Basically the idea I have in mind is a "shell" bag compoletely lined in the inside with velcro. Smaller sub compartments with specific intentions could be added as needed for specific devices.
Perhaps stuff like the following,
a small nylon "patch" with velcro backing that will hold 2-4 SD cards and 2-4 CF cards.
a small folding zippered patch with elastic loops inside that will secure 6-8 thumb drives or small USB devices.
small neoprene cases specific for devices by either size or function.
Basically a mix and match type of system where any existing case that can be modified with velcro attachments can be utilized as a securing method.
In a larger version, I think it would be great to integrate some type of "power strip" where a cord can be pulled from the bag and plugged in which would power charging cables plugged into the strip inside and attached to all devices in the bag.
Possible a pocket where speakers can be held in the bag and music can be played through. Plug in an ipod with the cable running through an access hole in the bag and attach the velcro backing to a patch on the outside of the bag and you have a mobile boombox.
Maybe a clear vinyl window area on the face of the bag with a pocket behind it where an axim or other palm computer can be stored and user through the bag. A neoprene lined cordura flap possibly with some rigid reinforcement can serve as facia protection.
a bag that will clamshell open almost completely flat, where the inside is lined with the curly velcro half. It would come with an assortment of various size pouches, some zipper closed, others with snaps with the underside of the pouches the 'pokey' side of the velcro. Then you could put the pouches where you want them, purchase additional larger or smaller ones to suit the devices you have and the sizes of the transformer bricks in the power cord.
On the outside of the case have a few accessory pouches for easy dumping of frequently used devices, like headphones or cell phones

I have a Maxpedition Jumbo Fatboy that I use as an around-town bag when I'm out on trips. You can attach a number of smaller pouches to it if you need more room. I can even attach my small camera case if I want, but I generally just slip it into the bag itself. It helps me keep things very organized and I like the modularity.
For traveling, I generally keep all my chargers and cables in a pencil pouch.
Due to rule #1, all my devices are USB powered. At walmart, there is a 4 AA battery USB charger stick that comes with a retractable miniUSB cable for $10.00 (in the camera accessory section).
On a long day, I have slid that battery stick into my front pants pocket with about 6" of the retractable cable connecting to my 8525 in my cell pouch on my hip. Recharging while walking :-)
To extend the value, I have purchased rechargable AA batteries (also from the camera accessory section) to go into the battery stick, while the recharger is in my backpack. The rechargables will add almost a 50% recharge to my PDA, and if that isn't enough standard AA batteries are available almost everywhere. Then I can recharge the phone and the AA batteries when possible.
$10.00 for USB battery stick and retractable USB cable
$20.00 for 4 AA rechargable batteries and charger
$10.00 for mini backpack

Yeah, you got the idea... From my military days, I always loved flexibility in how I set up my gear. Each person having different gear and in different places where it was most easily acccessible allows for a more efficient and capable warrior. I'm kinda thinking the same with this gear bag.
A big key to it would be the ability to attach any velcro enabled case or device. An example would be simply sticking velcro to the back of a couple small micro-otterboxes, velcro attached to my neoprene iPod case will allow for easy storage and allow for it to have constant protection as it never needs to be removed from it's neoprene skin, the same with cell phones.
Removing the clip from the back of a blackberry plastic holster and attaching velcro to it creates it's own holder.
I like your recharging concept with the portable charger in your pocket. Something like that modified to hold numerous rechargable cells could be integrated into the bag. At home, plug in the charging cable from the power strip and it recharges the recharge cell as well as charges each device attached to the strip.
Maybe a USB hub integrated would allow for a single point for all devices to synch wityh a host computer.

Perhaps Boxwave could do something like that.
a large rechargable battery with a small USB port strip, so it looks something like a power strip, except with USB Ports. Like this device if it could provide DC power to all the ports. http://www.webbcompany.com/details.php?prodID=342
Then a few retractable usb cables could then connect the devices to the strip

I have always been a gadget bag freak, and I finally stopped looking when I bought the Eagle Creek Sidekick. Well, actually, I bought a couple of bags after, but I kept going back to the Sidekick, until I finally figured it was the bag for me. It is a large waist pack (10.5" x 7" x 3" thick) which has it's waist straps tucked neatly into a rear pocket. It can also be used as a small should bag - which is how I use it. It comes with a padded shoulder strap. For me it's just the right size for a daily carry bag. Not too big or too small.
This bag has a large zippered main compartment, a thinner zippered compartment with some small organizer sleeves, a front zippered compartment for papers and such, an open front slip-in pocket, and a compartment in the back of the bag for the waist pouch straps which can also be used for some additional storage. They have changed the styling somewhat on the bag over the years, and quite frankly I liked the old style better, but the current version is not too bad.
I keep all of my daily gear in this bag - my wallet, checkbook, etc, plus personal accessories like my swiss army knife, led headlamp, small compass, small pillbox, plus my electronic gear - my Canon A540 camera, my WD Passport harddrive, and of course my Axim X5. Everything fits neatly into different areas of the bag (I did make a cardboard sleeve for the camera) and I can get to everything quickly with very little effort.
This is a very durable bag, but I'm on my second one. After about 10 years of daily use, one of the zippers on my first bag broke. I've been meaning to send it back to Eagle Creek - they have a lifetime warrantee.
If you want I can snap a picture and post it. Check out the Eagle Creek site and let me know what you think.
