From 2004 to 2006, 50 million people purchased a sexy, thin clamshell handset called the Razr. It was the most popular cell phone ever sold but with the hype over the last several months on the innovative iPhone, will it become the the new leader of the pack?
Some say yes and others say no but one thing is for sure, it will have a huge start on breaking the Razr record. May Wong, an AP Technology Writer, has an interesting take on the iPhone ... worth reading!
In part, May said:
Even if the product flops for some reason or stays limited to the high-end corner of the smart phone market, the iPhone has already jolted the industry, showing that it is not just the body and outward beauty of the handset that counts, but what's inside.

Its just over advertised, and people think its the next "sliced bread".
The initial cost will kill it. Many mobile companies give people phones for almost nothing, after rebates, and the monthly fees is how they [the cell companies] get their money back.
Also, as nice as the iphone/built in apps on it are, their will be no 3rd party apps. But on a wm/smartphone you can easily get some 3rd party apps that add funtions and are programs ur used to. I mean think of all the wm programs that once u found them out, u cant see using a mobile device without them.

It's going to depend on the target market, I think. You may be right ... in many cases the extensibility of the device is what really makes or breaks it. OTOH if the built-in application set is rich enough then users may not feel like they need to extend it. I don't think anyone knows for sure how well this one will work. I don't care about it, myself, because I don't want a converged device at all; I prefer my phone to be separate from my PDA - but that's just me.
The most obvious and prominent feature of the Iphone at the moment is the Hype. People will pay a fortune for it cause it's been promoted vaguely and they want to see what it does?

You are going to be asked (or already have been) to hook up the iPhone to your network's email system in some way. The problem is that the only protocol the iPhone supports is IMAP and that just does not cut it. The iPhone cannot work like a RIM BlackBerry or Windows Mobile. There is no built-in sync with Outlook that is secure enough. It does not work with Lotus Notes either. I think that is a major omission of Apple's part and they should know better if they want to sell to the business community.
For the moment the iPhone is is an attractive, expensive consumer device. Keep it out of your networks until Apple licenses software from either RIM or Redmond to act like a Blackberry or Windows Mobile. Another major drawback is that an iPhone user needs an iTunes registration, which means a music directory on the user's desktop (or lord forbid on the network share). That's a disk space problem and legal can of worms as which of these songs are stolen or violate copyright? Apart from all the above, block any other access because these things can slurp down a good chunk of corporate confidential data. Just say no. Alternatives that -are- recommended are for instance the new BlackBerry Curve 8300, and the Nokia N95.

If the iPhone finds its way into the Verizon stable I wonder how many features Verizon will disable, as they have done the Razr? We got Razrs in the family plan and found that, though they are V3m's (so-called MP3 capable), Verizon disabled file management. A hack will undo this but will also kill any warranty's if detected.
I am not an iSheep and I will be purchasing one. I may destroy it on purpose later, but I feel that someone that is a Windows Mobile Guy needs to check it out to see how it stacks up.
yes, it's pricy... it doesn't support alot of things that I need it to support, but I think that because of the "iSheep" it will be a huge success in the youth market. Kids ages 14-25 are going to be all over this phone. This generation don't know or need exchange server capabilities... They need a camera, an IM client, a music player, and a phone. This is the Holy Grail for those kids. I am not categorizing everyone in that bracket, but I am sure numbers will support that it's most of them.

A long time ago far away in a distant galaxy lived the apple_man and the windows_man both tended to gyrate towards products made by their respective stables. Then came the iphone.......(sorry my pen ran out - pls pick up the story if you can).
Bottom line is people will by either buy because the iphone meets their needs or because of the hype, either way Apple is looking to have another bumper harvest.
I bring you these 15 (crash) these 10 commandments....
