The HTC P4550 (Kaiser) ... The FIRST Review

modaco WOW, Paul from MoDaCo got one to review and it looks sweet.  This is one of the devices that I am most definitely lusting for and like Paul said, "when it comes to eagerly anticipated handset releases, they don't come much bigger than this".  Clearly this is what HTC has been moving toward, an almost perfect design for the  mobile professional.

Up until now, the device we all really want hasn't quite existed.  They have come close but there was always some other feature we wanted and it would be missing.  Well as Paul said:

Enter the HTC Kaiser.

You can imagine the design brief for the HTC engineers. "Let's take the HTC Herald / Atlas slim QWERTY form factor, and stuff in as much as we can. Let's not leave anything out. Let's include a fast (new generation) processor, tons of ROM and RAM, 3G, HSDPA, HSUPA, GPS, thumb wheel, lots of hardware buttons, a 3 Megapixel camera to set new benchmarks in the Windows Mobile world, a sprung QWERTY keyboard and - what the heck - let's dream up a cool new party piece too."

You definitely want to check out Paul's  Review.... it's here at MoDaCo

How could anyone not want this gem? I just hope that if AT&T gets it, they will retain the video calling capability.

AT&T is rolling out limited video calling now, so odds are they'll keep it in.

I want one... The Tytn on steriods.

I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to sell an 8525 for about $300, + the $100 I'd buy a GPS with... It would be worth about $200.00 more out of pocket for the upgrade...

I'll tell you why - the sliding keyboard. During my year of owning the KJAM the slide keyboard was a PIA to use. Plus, not having a front facing keyboard (like my 750) made using the KJAM as a phone a PIA also. Using the WM phone pad to dial a number or searching for a contact was just not what I wanted in a phone.

The Kaiser may have the "utimate in specs" but the form factor alone plus the inherent quirks of the WM OS make it a better PDA than phone device.

Isn't that the point?

Some people want a better phone with more functionality, and so a smartphone is probably best for them.

Some people want a PDA and the NOT carry a phone at the same time, so PPC phones are their best choice.

Of the second group, how much screen do you want? a small square screen with a front facing kbd or a larger screen with a slide out kbd?

Absolutely. However, to answer the question "who wouldn't wan't one of these?", I can say from past experience that the form factor doesn't lend itself to being a convenient phone device. It's part of the reason why more qwerty bar WM pro are needed in the marketplace.

I agree with the point Radimus made. I make maybe 3 calls from my mobile phone per day. I use my PDA all day. If I wnat to converge, I want a PDA first and phone second...
