Fujitsu Siemens quit PDAs

fujitsusLooxN100 First it was Dell and the Axim, now it's Fujitsu Siemens and the Pocket Loox that are pulling out of the PDA market.

According to a report on Engadget, they don't see the standalone PDA market as a viable sector anymore. The world is now going to be SIM card based... and that's just not what they do.

According to a statement by FSC spokesperson Amy Flécher, the decision to cut the proverbial cord was simply "due to the usual examination of the portfolios," and the firm apparently noticed that "the traditional handheld segment (PDA) [had been shrinking] for years." Essentially, the company felt that Smartphone would eventually swallow the "traditional handhelds" of the world, and considering that cranking out smartphones "is not its business at all," the decision seems logical

Darn it, I'm must be one of the few minorities that only wants a pda as a pda, a cell phone as a cell phone....

The current cell phone + pda doesn't work well for me...
I like my cell phone to be small, and there are times I don't carry my pda.
I also like my pda to have a wide screen but are not bulk down by cellphone companies (locked phones), and needless keyboards.

I better buy a few more Axims..... I refuse to change

It's not my fault this time... (ok I did buy Psion, Sony Clie, and an Axim... but I've never owned a Loox).

I love my Pocket PC phone, but there are a lot of positives about a 2 box solution

That is sad. The Loox models looked nice (don't think they ever made it to the US, but looked good on some of the UK / European sites).
HP and Palm seem the only 'major' vendors still producing non-phone PDAs still, barely ...

Damn! I was torn between an X50v and the equivalent Loox. I don't regret buying the X50v but once the writing was on the wall for it, I thought the newest Loox would be my next PDA.

I've felt the PDA market has been dying for a while. The whole idea of "such and such a concept is dead" is rubbish, these things fade out and when they finally do die, there's no report because no one notices or cares.

Looks like my next PDA will be a sim-free smartphone. As long as it has PDA specs (VGA or greater, etc) I guess it doesn't matter except that it's going to cost a bit more for useless phone features. I had a smartphone (SE P900), it was good but I came to realise that its size was a problem - I upgraded to a RAZR for it's size and an X50v for it's features and never looked back!
