Code to unlock iPhone cracked - CNN.com

ipasw CNN reported that a group of anonymous software developers indicated that they are about to release a program that will allow users to to enjoy the iPhone goodness that up until now has been restricted to AT&T.

This software was demonstrated for CNN by Los Angeles software consultant Brett Schulte on an iPhone that had the new software.  As soon as the new SIM was inserted, the T-Mobile system appeared in just seconds.

Want to bet the Apple and AT&T lawyers are working overtime this long holiday weekend?

Check out the FULL story here at CNN.com

This was on Engadget last week. Probably best to give them a link as well.

As for the lawyers, they certainly don't have a case when the iPhone comes to the UK. Unlocking is entirely legal here. I will leave it to others, more knowledgeable than I, to state US law.

I wonder what percentage of people would actually take advantage of that? Is it a tiny percentage or a significant percentage? It seems to me that it would be quite a hassle for just a small gain - the ability to use Tmobile in the US. I think people mostly do it for the challenge, and I applaude them for their balls and their brilliance.

Well, even though they can now use the phone for whichever network they wish to use, as long as the user pays their monthly fees, I doubt AT&T is going to complain too much.

Oh, and I'm sure they'll like the idea that they can say "you've invalidated your warranty! Ha Ha!"

No animals or trees were harmed in the production of this post - however, several billion electrons were seriously inconvenienced.
